Oof! Has this affected anyone here?

Viacom Pulls Its Channels Off of DirecTV

Viacom has pulled its 17 cable channels including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, VH1 and Spike off of DirecTV after the parties failed to negotiate a new carriage agreement. Unlike AMC Network’s current dispute with Dish, many more people watch Viacom’s networks, so it will be interesting to see who blinks first.

DirecTV claims that Viacom is asking for an increase of one billion dollars in fees and argues it is already paying Viacom hundreds of millions a year. To put the extra billion dollars in perspective, that amounts to less than $5/month more per DirecTV subscriber. That’s the wholesale price though, the retail markup would be higher.

Wondering if this has affected anyone else?

Personally, I have Verizon FiOS, so you would THINK this wouldn't affect me...except that Viacom's doubling down on their idiocy and pulling WEB STREAMS off of their sites to go the extra mile and make sure DirecTV customers can't access them. I believe this is known as cutting off your nose to spite your face.

EDIT: This title thread is a misnomer, as it's more of a case of "Viacom pulls its channels from DirecTV" instead of vice versa.

Out of all of the networks pulled, I only really watch Stewart and Colbert on a consistent basis. 17 networks and 4 hours of TV lost per week? Can't say I'm really feeling any effect.

My kids are more into Disney than SpongeBob/iCarly these days so they haven't missed the Nick channels at all as of yet, and having watched the first few eps of the Snooki & JWOWW show I really don't feel as if I'm missing anything by not having MTV for the moment.

I'll probably miss VH-1 Classic this weekend when I'm looking for some diversion in the early morning or during commercial breaks throughout the day, but otherwise, not even noticing it yet.

Sounds brutal to me.

My household is super busy these days so we don't watch as much TV as we used to, but I'm thanking my lucky stars we got a super sweet package deal from Verizon (and our home came pre-wired for FiOS when we moved in!) so we didn't even think twice about leaving DirecTV.

I would certainly miss the irregular (but frequent) stopovers late at night on Comedy Central and TeenNick (they're still showing classic 90s Nick shows). I also love the great random nonsense like "1000 Ways to Die" and "Repo Games" that seems to always be on Spike.

Comedy Central is the only one I watch with any regularity, but it just irks me that they can pull these channels because they don't want to pay Viacom any more money for them, but we're still being charged the same for 17 fewer channels. I *really* regret getting that free high-def update a few weeks ago that locked me into a 2 year contract...my original contract had just expired - d'oh!

How you feel about this certainly depends on your point of view, but DirecTV's position is that Viacom pulled them as a "negotiating" ploy rather than let them stay on as a show of good faith during the negotiations. I have no doubt the matter will be settled and we'll be paying more to have those channels back, so you may not see any of that increase until your new contract is up if you've locked in a set price maybe?

Surprise surprise. Viacom would rather be a giant dick and piss off non-customers rather than just accept they can't stop free streaming. Hulu looks safe... for now.

As much as I love the Daily Show and Colbert, this crap makes me want to switch to Conan out of protest. Not that Time Warner is any better.

Its times like this I feel we should all just give up on tv. See what kind of programming fees Viacom gets when there are no viewers.

The real screaming over losing channels will be this fall of Dish doesn't get AMC back up for Walking Dead. I am also stuck in the tail end of a 2 year contract. I have had Comcast and DirectTV and all of them suck as well. I have heard Verizon is terrible as well. So, I have no idea what to do when my contract is up in January. I just wish we could pay for the channels, we want. I don't need 20 Infomercial channels.

If you call in to customer service, they will most likely give you a discount on your rate for the duration of the dispute. (At least that is what one of my neighbors reported.)

I went through the Guide last night to see what I was missing, and realized if nobody had brought it up, I would have likely not even noticed.

I guess I'm too old to care anymore. It's just TV. Big deal.

Any company who fights for fewer rate increases is just fine with me.

And, over on the "Dish vs AMC" front, AMC is (cleverly, IMO) taking the opposite approach (m.deadline.com). Apparently AMC is setting up a stream of the Breaking Bad season premiere for Dish customers. I love the phrasing: "...we want to give Dish customers an extra week to switch providers so they can enjoy the rest of the season.” Clever.
