Well, congress is currently considering cutting benefits to our veterans by about 8 billion dollars. I personally find this outrageous, since it's basically telling all of our veterans "You're of no use anymore, sorry." The federal government is involved in so many things they should not be involved in, and our first cut is from the benefits of veterans.

I agree....especially considering we're at war right now.

Do we have any additional hard facts on this? On gut- I believe we should take care of our boys (and girls now), but if the 8 millions is a purely extraneous expense, I have no problem taking a hard look at cutting it...

it's 8 billion according to a congressman I heard on a radio show today. It hasn't passed yet, but it's being discussed.

I mean specifics about exactly WHAT that money was to go to? "Benefits" is kind of vague...

From here (capwiz.com)

By a vote along party lines, the majority members of the House Budget Committee passed and reported for a vote by the House a budget resolution that would cut $844 million from veterans' medical care next year and $9.7 billion over the next 10 years. In addition, the budget resolution would cut $15 billion from the disability compensation and other benefit programs over the next 10 years.

This is a stink ass move. The Politicians vote all the time to give themselves raises, then cut money that goes to people that actually did something for this country.

Well, I am still uncertain about where I stand on this, but I don't think it should be dismissed out of hand. I am of the opinion that you don't "NOT" do something because something else that is similar (and more appropriate) is not being done.
There is no doubt that we are overspending. On everything. And yes, the politicians need to cut their salaries. And yes, we need to stop wasting money on stupid garbage like "Studies to figure out why people don't like us." But honestly, this may be a good thing. I'll tell you why.

First off, the cuts are to take place over the next ten years- so it is definitly a move for the future. While I totally think we need to take care of our vetrans that are harmed in the line of duty, we may be encountering a unique situation in the near future where there is really very few that need taken care of. The nature of warfare has definitly changed, and will continue to change over the next decade. Will we really NEED that amount of money allocated to pay for the disabilities of our vetrans? How many of our vetrans will continue to lead productive and secure lives after their service is done, and not need those benefits?

Again, I think we absolutly need to take care of our servicemen, but if it is an issue where that is going to occur, and we will be far overspending if we do nothing, I say make the cuts. And don't let those cuts stop here- move on to other departments that are far more wasteful than this...

I heard a congressman say that it had to do with ending fraud, but I'm not sure how this deals with that.
