This show's in an awesome little groove right now and showing some really nice continuity along the way. Plus, it was some of their best work tonight with the "DocuCam as 4th wall" element with that whole King Of The World thing.

Although I may have to take points away for the fact that I can't get the drunken sailor song out of my head. Thanks, Dwight.

Do you want us to run aground, woman?

Jim/Pam scenes really make the world go 'round. They are aww-inspiring. I'd say it's the one aspect of the American show that has for sure equalled the original. John Krasinski is sensational. Jim confiding in Michael was curious but sweet.

I enjoyed tonight's ep (especially the amazing Jim-Pam dynamic -- Jim telling Kate "Let's break up." in response to Pam's *real* engagement and his subsequent drunken depression was awesome), but unless I'm mistaken this is the third straight episode involving a party. Also, where was Kate during Jim's party a few weeks ago? The intern was asking about her, and Jim seemed like he didn't care, so I was surprised to see her here tonight.

This is easily my favorite show on television right now (at least it will be until Wednesday...)

"But you said bring a bathing suit"
"That was just to throw you off the trail"
"But I went out and bought one"
"Take it back"
"I already took the tags off"
"That's not my fault"

(paraphrased of course)
"Yes it is Michael" I yelled at the screen.

I'm liking this show more than "Scrubs" which I didn't think was possible.
I LOVED how Jim and Pam pretended they never heard of the movie "Titanic" just to mess with Michael.

then,
"but the furnace crew all died..."
Michael: "Hello! Spoiler Alert!!"

I caught this show for the first time in awhile with this episode...while I liked it, I still think they need to scale back the character of Michael just a little bit. I understand he's supposed to be an irritating ass, but he's not supposed to frustrate the viewer to the point of making it a chore to stay tuned in for everything else. It's probably just me, though.

Yes, it is. Calling Mr. Theme and Mr. Subtext! The whole POINT in the episode is that Michael is an irritating ass, failing miserably at every attempt to motivate anyone because he's trying too hard. Then at the end, in two minutes, he motivates Jim so deeply that Michael is probably incapable of understanding just how much.

It's a recurring theme with the character, and if you ask me, it's the whole point of the show (besides being achingly hilarious. Just like the whole point of Star Wars wasn't turning the whiny bitch Luke into a hero (although that was a subplot - and by the way, did you stop watching Star Wars because of how whiny he was? I hope not) it was the redemption of Vader. Assuming The Office has a finite storyline, I'm assuming the last episode will have Michael realize what an ass he is and quit to be stockboy at an electronics store or something.

It's a recurring theme with Michael. Remember the Dundeys? How about how he fell apart during the purchase of his condo when Dwight and the cameras were there? How about when he landed the star customer AND macked on Jan because he was being himself?

Maybe he's too annoying for you, but dude, you're missing the whole point. Sometimes you have to endure some stupid sitcom crap to get to the payoff.

The problem with the show (which is still a very funny show) is that its infinitely less believable than its original. It's established itself as taking the original's premise and filtering it through the lens of a traditional sitcom, and I think it fills out that niche nicely. But whenever they try to bring things back to reality and ground them with real emotion, they're coming up several steps short of the original. Still find the show immensely enjoyable, though. Just more sloppily written, which is simply a casualty of the premise being stretched into a standard US episode load.

A bigger problem for me sometimes is not Michael's attempts at motivation, it's just that he's so unlikeable. Case in point, the basketball episode from season one. He was such a big jerk and, I think it takes away from the parts of the character you're talking about, like when he does try to motivate and do well but just doesn't know how.
