Cameras roll on The Prisoner remake

CULT Sixties TV classic The Prisoner is coming back to the screen in a 2006 remake.
Granada are to film a new version of the controversial series which is one of the most talked about dramas in the history of the small screen.
Originally screened by ITV in 1967 and 1968, it starred Patrick McGoohan as a former secret agent who was kidnapped and imprisoned in a mystery village.
His escape attempts were usually foiled by a giant bubble called Rover.
The 17 episodes were actually filmed in the Welsh tourist village of Portmeirion.
McGoohan's character was known throughout as Number Six and his catchphrase was: "I am not a number, I am a free man."
Liberties
TV bosses say the new version will be filmed in a different location, with an eight-part series set to be screened on Sky One next year.
It will be written by Bill Gallagher, whose previous work includes Manchester and Cheshire-filmed BBC3 hit Conviction, which starred William Ash, Ian Puleston-Davies and Nicholas Gleaves.
Executive producer Damien Timmer said the new series "takes liberties with the original" and will be aimed at fans of shows like Spooks and 24.
"Although it will be a radical reinvention, it will still be a heightened show with themes such as paranoia, conspiracy and identity crisis," he said.
The Prisoner, also now released on DVD, has provoked decades of speculation about its true meaning and arguments over the controversial ending, which left many puzzled.

As for a remake, I wonder how far they want to take it, how sophisticated they think they need to make for a modern audience. I just hope sophistication doesn't turn in to a bunch of WTF moments put in for their own sake. | emma

Without the cold war undercurrent to the whole thing, they're going to be struggling trying to differentiate this show from any other "who are the good guys & who are the bad guys" format. Between "takes liberties" & "radical reinvention", I'm thinking that the title is about all they'll reuse -- which is probably for the best. (I'll be much happier if it's a good show rather than a bad remake.)
