Isn't it funny when heels come out and give speeches that everyone knows is right on the money?

But a heel's saying it, so you have to boo.

Lawler isn't capable of doing competenet color and is a one-trick sexist pony.

I loved young Mr. Levy bringing up how Kat left Lawler.

I missed that part (the kat thing), I was either on the can or watching Biography.

But him being out there was damned entertaining.

It's so funny 'cuz it's true. It's even better than the occasional barb from JR. Sigh, but why couldn't they have had Raven actually WIN?

Because they're in Memphis - and nobody loses in their hometown (even when they deserve to).

'cause they were in Memphis, and The King can't lose in Memphis. That's the whole reason that the thing happened, I figure, so that the King could have a match in Memphis, like every time they're in Memphis.

Oh GOD yes. And usually I don't mind it so much but this time it good and *killed* the the flow of this show (which was hurting anyways) and for what? A countout win and Raven getting a few justifiable digs on Lawlwer.

Countout wins and Dusty Finishes. Madre de dios.

Well, it's not like they could have Lawler piledrive Raven.
Still, I loved every minute of it here. Of course, I wasn't there in person, but what-eva. :)

Flow of the show? What flow? The show was a train wreck. And why wasn't Lawler given a clean pinfall win? If you're going to make a match to make the hometown fans happy, MAKE THE HOMETOWN FANS HAPPY! They wanted to see Lawler drop the fist and pin the fool, not win by countout. Does Raven have some heat needing saved? Must have been fooling me.

The way it was booked, it seemed to be more of a start of a feud than a one-time thing, as scary as that may be.

Yeah the show never really gelled--it was like 30 good minutes stretched agonizingly thin over 2+ hours but dammit, JR snuck in a reference to that awful "Dragnet" movie during the Regal match, and that's something to be proud of.

Hey, if it gets Lawler somewhere else and Raven on Raw, I wouldn't call that scary. But yeah, they should've had something decisive. I just looked at the countout as the only finish they could think of without using the piledriver.

DarkRenegade, Lawler got his ass kicked for most of the match, for what that's worth. His only offense was literally the finish.

But think about it... this could be the beginning of the end of Lawler's announcing career in the WWF.

And if it is, THAT is a good thing. Regardless of the quality of the matches that lead up to such an event.

I mentioned this briefly in the Raw recap thread, but I think all Raven accomplished tonight was a "you say he sucks, but you weren't that great either" move. At the same time, Raven has shown his abilities on Heat, and this feud would be an entertaining way of phasing Raven into the commentator's chair.

That being said, I don't think Jerry Lawler is without purpose in wrestling. Lawler brings a light tone to the shows he works. Sometimes its inappropriate, sometimes it hurts rather than helps, but you don't have the dark, negative over-serious tones that Paul Heyman brought...which I think overall hurts the product. Wrestling is campy. There has to be a balance between comedy and making us suspend disbelief. Heyman and Lawler are the two extremes...the next big thing in commentating needs to straddle that line.

What this angle also shows is that the WWF knows that Lawler's act is wearing thin. So this could be an opportunity to hook Lawler up to the juvenation machine and get him to focus on getting fresh.

Regal had a match tonight? God the things you miss when you try to avoid all the crap. I thought that only the Hardys/NWO, Raven/Lawler, UT/RVD had matches tonight... oh yeah, and Trish/Jackie... whatever. Raven really sucked on commentary tonight, but it would be great if we could have a three-man announce team on RAW. Lawler was playing major face tonight, dissing on the Undertaker and cheering on RVD, so I think Lawler as a tweener, and Raven as a heel would make great commentary. If Raven actually talked about things, that is.

I missed the first half of RAW, and thus when I saw Raven challenging Lawler, I thought it was going to be a set-up. Raven was "going to the back to get his gear on," but I was expecting Lesnar to come or something and just destroy the King. Kicking Lawler's ass in his own hometown would've gotten MASSIVE heat and really built up Lesnar as a monster.

Not with quotes like:

"You know nothing about wrestling anymore do you? You obviously don't know anything about women either or your wife wouldn't have left you."

YES! YOU TELL HIM JOHNNY POLO! YOU TELL HIM! [/smark mode]

Match sucked, build up was hilarious.

Never mind the fact that Lawler is by far the best commentator in the biz, having to carry the positively awful Jim Ross on his back for at least two years now. Just listen to the number of times per broadcast where Lawler corrects Ross, completes a drifting sentence, or refocuses the "great commentator"'s thoughts as they drift aimlessly into the ether.

What's funny is that it used to be a long-standing tradition in the WWF that people would always lose in their hometowns. The one exception was usually whatever Samoans were working in San Francisco or Oakland, "to stop the fans from rioting."

I came home from rehearsal last night (last of the season and in my case, last for several months as I'm taking sabbatical, my director just don't know it yet; he's going to get a version of the "sometimes you have a choice" speech when I tell him), sat down & propped my feet up for the last hour of RAW.....

....and marked out like a motherhubbard for the whole Raven/Lawler thing!!

Let's face it, when they're in Memphis, somebody's gotta come out and more or less be "King fodder". Raven got handed that task last night & played it out to perfection, chickens**t heel non-finish and all!

Still, I couldn't help thinking, "Ok. Is this October, 2000 or May 2002?" He was re-introduced to WWF audiences by interferring in King's strap match against Tazz at "Unforgiven", which led to a brief feud between the two.

Unfortunately, it's a double-edged sword. Raven on commentary (read: RAW) is gonna cut down drastically on ring time and any hope of moving higher up the card.

That being said, as long as he's on TV, I'm happy. (And with some people missing--and NO, I won't name names--I'm f***ing ecstatic!)
