Chargers fire Schottenheimer

1. I hope he doesn't go back to ESPN.

2. Who is out there for the Chargers to get this late, especially now that Wade Phillips is in Dallas?

So in a matter of weeks, the Chargers have lost their offensive coordinator to Miami, their defensive coordinator to Dallas, and their head coach to...firing. Dear God, it's a total housecleaning. And these guys went 14-2! I've never seen anything like it. Where the hell does San Diego go from here?

I know it's a long shot, but anyone think Bill Cowher's phone will be ringing anytime soon?

Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Wait and see, I know, but I can't help but think this is the worst idea a front office has ever had.

It might be ringing, but a return call from the Steelers might be on the other line discussing how many draft picks the Chargers would like to present to them for Cowher. You would presume it would be a minimum 1st and 3rd round pick, since Cowher still had a year left on his Pittsburgh deal.
If the NCAA is really setting its sights on USC, Carroll should be driving down I-5 by the end of the weekend, once the Chargers get through with the Rooney Rule portion of their search.

Sorry, not trying to gunk up the thread, and this may be a really stupid question, but when is the G.M. more important than the head coach?

Look at Green Bay...

Take it from a Colts fan, winning that many games in the regular season and not advancing in the playoffs is unacceptable. Jim Irsay was very wise not to fire Tony Dungy over last year's disappointing loss to the Steelers (and now look, we're champions of the world, wooo!) but one playoff loss can make a 14-2 season look not so good.

The Chargers will be okay, though, I think. They're a team stocked with talent.

While Pete should be running away from USC, I don't really know if he'd be the first one I'd call. I mean he's had a shot in the NFL and it didn't go so well. Hardly an upgrade from what they had.

If they were thinking college though, I've heard Stoops is really getting tired of the college crap.

I believe Parcells is under contract like Cowher and it'd be a draft pick issue. I also believe both guys sincerely want a year off and wouldn't come back unless they got stupid money.

If a GM is throwing out a coach because of control issues - and this reads like arguments over who'd be the new OC and DC - the GM's going to bring in someone that won't be strong enough to make those choices either. It's a greatly promising job and major names will be interested, but they're not going to start one power struggle just after resolving another.

It'll be a first year/young coach, with them looking at those guys who were interviewed elsewhere but didn't make it - Rivera or Singletary or Grimm or the Colts OC who's name I can't recall, or someone along those lines.

I also heard on Czaban this morning that Marty and Cowher are such good friends that Cowher wouldn't take over for Marty like that.

Nice pick, Cowahhh!

I can't believe that Carroll would go there simply because he'd want to be the GM as well as the coach and this is pretty much the polar opposite of that situation.

My first thought was Cowher but according to John Clayton (DAMMIT) Marty is one of his best friends, so you would think that would have disaster written all over it. EDIT: Or in other words, what pieman said.

The name being bantered about this morning was Norv Turner, to which I can only say "Blah." I wonder if they will give Steve Mariucci a call.

But is Singletary a proponent of the 3-4? If not, it makes no sense to bring in a defensive minded coach if the players don't fit into his philosophy, or his philosophy doesn't do justice to his players strengths. Merriman loses some of his dominance if he is put into a 4-3 defense rather than his role on the outside in the 3-4.

It will be a former Broncos coach. I dread this fact, yet I know it in my heart to be true.

//edit: because a former Raiders coach is too improbable and this would hurt the second most.

The rumor that seems to be rolling around is that the ownership REALLY wanted Ted Cotrell as the defensive coordinator, and now they might give him a look at coach.

Which is funny because I really don't remember Ted as much of a coordinator.

I'm sorry, but doesn't a coach of a team that goes 14-2 deserve at least one more year? People put to much stock into what coaches can and can't do. The coaches don't have as much control as people (owners) apparently believe they do. People don't put enough stock into variables that are out of coach's hands, out of the player's hands, and sometimes out of everyone's hands, but variables that can determine the outcome of a football game.

It was common knowledge that Marty had one more year to get results, and thus with both coordinators gone, Chargers management probably felt that it was easier to just start over now than start over in early 2008. I think it's a great move. Marty, god bless his crusty heart, just cannot win in the playoffs, and this team is too good to let waste in a series of second-round and conference final elimations.

Though it may seem the market is thin at this point, what coach wouldn't want to come to San Diego? All-world running back, great tight end, great defense, good quarterback....this a great opportunity for a coach to step right in, pull a Jon Gruden and take the team immediately to a Super Bowl. Hey, actually, what about Jon Gruden?

I'm guessing Pat Riley's been in Spanos' ear.
