For the most part, a solid show.

Jay Lethal wins the Steel Asylum: As far as I know, there was nothing on the line with this match, it had no hype, none of the wrestlers got entrances, and it jerked the curtain. Weird to make one of their "patented" structure matches so unimportant. Still, pretty fun.

Suicide did not appear; I wonder if they're actually going to wait for Kaz to heal to go ahead with this.

Rhino, ODB, and Rhaka Khan vs. The Beautiful People and "Cute" Kip: Not too great. Rhino pinned Kip with a gore.

Sheik Abdul Bashir vs. Consequences Creed: Crowd was heavily pro-Creed and pro-USA, but Bashir used a roll-up (the official finishing move of the X-Division!) and grabbed the ropes to pin Creed (and keep the X title).

Awesome Kong vs. Roxxi vs. Taylor Wilde: Started out well; ended abruptly. Wilde retained the belt by fighting out of the Voodoo Cajun Drop and pinning Roxxi with a bridging German.

Beer Money vs. Team 3D vs. Matt Morgan & Abyss vs. LAX: This was a Monster's Ball match for the Tag Team titles, and it was a lot of fun. Highlights include: Homicide FORKING Devon's head open, Morgan hitting a crossbody off the top rope to a group of guys on the floor, Hernandez Border Tossing Morgan (!), and 3D slamming Abyss of the entrance stage through a FLAMING table on the floor. Finish came when 3D 3D'd Hernandez face-first through a thumbtack-covered table, and then Beer Money dashed in and stole the pin -- ha ha! BEER! MONEY!

Oh, and Mongo looks like a GIANT DOOFUS.

AJ Styles vs. Christian Cage vs. Booker T: Another good match. There was a heart-stopping moment when AJ Styles leapt to the top rope and I thought he was going to leap into the ring at Booker, but instead he moonsaulted to the outside onto Cage; it was the complete opposite of what I expected and really startled me. They did a lot on one-on-one stuff to fill up the middle and then some fun three-man stuff, like Styles leaping off of Christian's knee (he was kneeling to do a spinarooni [?!]) onto Booker. Cage hit Styles with an unprettier off the top, but then Booker came off the same turnbuckle with an axe kick to put Cage down for the three-count.

Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Jarrett: Mick Foley is the special enforcer. Mick's been having little comedy vignettes between most of the matches, and to be honest I'm already sick of him. Also, when Tenay calls him "the greatest acquisition in TNA history" it baffles and saddens me. Anyway, this was a fine straight-up wrestling match up until the end; the ref gets bumped, and Angle goes for the chair. Foley tries to stop him and gets CLOCKED. Angle hit JJ with the chair as well; ref wakes up and starts counting but Foley pulls him out. Foley gets the sock, applies the mandible claw, and Jarret hits Angle with the guitar for the pin (counted by Mick).

Samoa Joe vs. Sting: Let's split the match into three parts. The first part was the "brawl in the crowd" part, which featured perhaps the most ill-advised move I've seen in years: Samoa Joe charging, leaping OVER a railing, and landing on his ass & back on the stairway some distance below. Seriously, this looked INCREDIBLY painful and it's difficult to imagine a way to make it a "safe" move. But I'm not a professional, so who knows.

In the second part, they got in the ring and Joe just OWNED Sting. This part was similar to when Joe dismantled Booker at Victory Road. I enjoyed this part.

The third part is the finish: Kevin Nash came down. Sting, realizing he couldn't win, went for the bat. Nash took it away, but then -- raise your hand if you saw this coming -- hit Joe with it. Sting caught Joe in the Scorpion Death Drop and pinned him. For the 3rd year in a row, Sting wins the championship at Bound for Glory.

I know that my frustration at Sting wrestling very rarely and yet getting handed a title every single year is probably part of TNA's plan; Joe has alluded to this already. And I realize that this could lead to a cool storyline where Joe has to fight through the veterans to get his title back.

It's just that I no longer have any confidence that it will turn out this way. I think it's more likely that the "Young Guys vs. Veterans" storyline will end with Jeff Jarrett beating Sting for the title and declaring a victory for the Young Guys while Joe and Styles look on from the sidelines, smiling and giving Jeff a thumbs-up.

Holy cow this sounds like one hell of a bad show, especially for "the biggest PPV of the year". We're talking Wrestlemania 4-like disaster here.

The matches were pretty good, but the booking and finishes were absolutely atrocious. Compare No Mercy's top two matches with these - two clean-as-a-sheet finishes resulting in both competitors getting over. Here? A ridiculous schmozz involving a WWE nostalgia prop (Socko, not Foley) that put neither guy over, and Sting cheating to win and making Joe look like a dope in the process.

As a standalone show it was fine, but the booking was just wrong from top to bottom.

EDIT: Also, regarding this from Karlos:

"I know that my frustration at Sting wrestling very rarely and yet getting handed a title every single year is probably part of TNA's plan..."

If it is, it's a dumb plan. For that angle to work the company has admit - tacitly or otherwise - that Sting is being booked y the higher-ups to win the thing. Which would then implicate new number one babyface and self-confessed TNA bigwig Jeff Jarrett. If you don't include that part of the angle - "Sting barely wrestles but is booked to win the title every year" - you have no way of Joe complaining about Sting's win without him sounding whiny and/or stupid.

If you have to make the Wrestlemania analogy, you may as well use either IX or 13. IV was cute in a way.

Ah. Let's say, rather, that what TNA wants me to feel is: Sting is lazy and doesn't work very often, and now here he is, he tries to cheat, and then one of his "veteran" buddies cheats for him, and he thus gets "handed" the title.

So not "booking," per se -- just that Sting will take shortcuts to keep on clinging to his former glory, rather than "playing fair," which would likely result in getting beaten by Joe.

(Jeff Jarrett can thus take the side of the young guys because he knows that they are the future of the company he founded.)

The problem is that TNA is paying a lot of lip service to elevating the young guys, but, with very few exceptions, they are extremely reluctant to actually do so. (Which is my actual source of frustration.) Joe loses the title to two 49-year-old men, Styles is a non-factor in the finish to his match, and none of the other up-and-comers are playing any role whatsoever in this story. MCMG and Jay Lethal and LAX should be front-and-center but they're totally MIA.

For the most part, the PPV was pretty good. The usual TNA caveats apply -- BOTH main events had annoyingly goofy screwy finishes -- and it didn't have a "biggest show" feel, but by and large the action was good.

.. Uh, I didn't think of it like that, but ok.

Also - WM9 was good and WM13 had one good match.

Foley question from someone who rarely watches TNA: If he is signed through the beginning of March, when would he have the opportunity to build up young stars? I ask that because you would presume he would have a few month program with Angle, which would probably take you towards December. Then, I'm sure Foley would like to have another go around with Sting in an attempt to resurrect the magic they had over 15 years ago. That probably puts you into February, which, barring extending Foley, doesn't leave him any time to put over young talent.

Is there any video up of the Samoa Joe jumping down the stairs spot? I've read it was a dumb move for it's riskiness in a few places, but would like to see it for myself.

He's been doing that enough, it's time to get the "dream feuds" going. Beating Foley doesn't mean as much as it did when HHH did it in 2000.

Click Here (youtube.com) (Who knows how long this clip will stay up.)

Weirdly, the spot seems cut out in real time (at 1:40), but there's a replay at 1:55.

Wow. Joe is lucky he didn't break his coccyx, or have an Kellen Winslow-like "undisclosed injury to the groin (profootballtalk.com)."

It looks like Bound for Glory was Johnny Devine's last show with TNA -- he's asked for and received his release (reportedly to go back to school, although I've no good source for that) and is already off TNA's roster page.

Devine was always solid in the ring and semed like a good guy. On the other hand, the X Division is going nowhere and "Ray and Devon's toady" isn't exactly primo resum fodder.

How does he not end up hurt there?

I fear walking out on my two step stoop in the winter mornings as I am afraid to take a much simpler fall than that.

That move just wasn't worth the risk. Not only did most the audience probably miss it, the damn cameras cut away on the live feed. How you don't slip a disc, chip a bone or mess up an ankle on that just amazes me. Someone needs to tell this guy how to pick his spots if he wants to keep making money in wrestling.

No, the camera caught it on the actual PPV -- this YouTube clip cuts it the first time around, I don't know why, but on the actual PPV we saw the same shot as the second replay.

Your other points are excellent. It reminded me and my brother of the Johnny the Bull spot where he broke his pelvis and ruptured his bladder doing a legdrop from the ring to the outside.
