CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A church's plan for an old-fashioned book-burning has been thwarted by city and county fire codes.

Yup, because their freedom of speech to burn the books is not as important as your freedom of speech to stop them.

Everyone's freedom of speech is sacred under our laws with obvious exceptions. That is why the ACLU sides with the Nazis and Klan. Burning thoughts is reprehensible but not allowing them that right is moreso.
Ultimatley, this groups actions only hurt them and expose them for what they really are. That in many ways is a very real purpose of freedom of speech. Exposing ideas to the light of truth is the ultimate acid test. | Stilton

They generally are the ones who feel a need to make a statement like burning books.
So they are throwing everything out in the trash eh? Well it looks like looters are going to have some good pick up's once the fire and brimstone service is over.

Wow. When you run out of arguments you can call people names. That's so cool!
Besides, Canada has a proud history of proescuting people for so-called "Hate Speech", as I have documented here before.

Now, as far as the whole arguement goes, it's not like your country is standing alone as the beacon of free speech. As an example, the state of Pennsylvania added an amendment to its hate-crimes law that covers something called "harassment by communication." It's got Christians fired up, because it may stop Pastors from preaching against homosexuality.
Do I agree with this? No. Do I support curtailing hate speech with the hammer of the law? No.
But if you think that stifling free speech is limited only to Canada, then give your head a shake.

Perhaps if they had taken their sorry asses to the place that was designated, nothing would've happened. This wasn't censorship, this was Darwinism weeding out the retards.
Not being from Canada, I can only comment on what I see on television and read from other Canadians. That said, while CBC is getting rid of Don Cherry, in part for his "outrageous" commentary, he barely holds a candle to Steven A. Smith who is allowed to run wild with whatever crap he sees fit to spew. Also, I always read a certain Canadian wrestling reviewer who mentions that all the violence towards women is edited out on TSN up there. I could be wrong, but Canada seems a bit more strict on what they allow to be heard or seen publicly than in the U.S. If that's incorrect, please let me know.

Well, Cherry has made insulting comments about Europeans and French-Canadians, groups who make up a significant number of NHL players and fans. So I'd say that the CBC is somewhat justified in being weary of his on-camera tirades.
As far as Canada being more strict as to what is seen or heard, I'm inclined to disagree. TSN may not show women getting beat up on RAW - But the CBC, Showcase, W, CTV and countless other networks frequently air questionable content. | Reverend J Shaft

As questionable as in the U.S.? Do they show naked asses and people calling each other assholes (i.e. an episode of NYPD Blue)? (I'm not being sarcastic here...)
