Now it seems like it's an okay thing to do to boo the national anthem of an opposing country. It really showed in Detroit in game 1 basketball game with Toronto.

Here's a question, why do we play the national anthem before game. It's always been custom but should we seperate sport and politics?

One more thing, the next time I hear a sportcaster question the intellegence of the wrestling fan, while he speaks to mainstream sport fan. I'm going to freak.

Speaking from an outsiders point of view, could it be that: the average American is told how fantastic their country is and how much they should love it, so often they equate anything non-American with being inferior.

Alternately it could just be a misguided belief they are showing their loyalty to their team by booing anything to do with the other team.

I certainly wouldn't appreciate it if Canadian's booed our National Anthem, so I would never even consider booing theirs. Plus, "O Canada" is a better song than the U.S. National Anthem in my humble opinion.

The odd thing was that in the case of the anthem getting booed at the Leafs/Islanders game, a good few of the Isles are Canadian!

Anyway, booing ANY anthem is just appalling. No call for that at all. Especially for two countries who have been great neighbours for so long(Canada and USA).

I was at a game at Madison Square Garden a couple of years ago between the Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks when the microphone went out on John Amirante as he started "O Canada" - without missing a beat the capacity crowd broke into a rousing rendition of the song.

Now if it had been either Long Island's song or the state song of NJ, it might have been a different story.

Hey, during my six or seven years of having Flames' season tickets...not once did I boo the US anthem. Why? Because THEY GOT THE NUKES, and they'll use 'em if I boo 'em.

Oh you poor misguided North Americans.

If only you had ever seen an England game.

Our fans not only take it on themselves to boo/whistle/generally shout down any other teams anthem, but they take pride in it.

Oddly it only happens at football (not rugby) but I don't really see it as a bad thing the way the commentators, and apparently you, do.

Its all part of the sort of pre game/war dance/psyching out thing that goes on, a bit like the New Zealand Haka (which literally is a war dance!).

Its not like their putting down the other country its just trying to gain a psychological advantage, mind games.

Americans and Canadians enjoy acting all "appalled" over minor things like this. The only problem being that in hockey, almost every team is at least 25% canucks, so Isles or Wings fans booing the Canuck Theme Song is sort of pointless. On the other hand there are very very few Canadians in the NBA. The simplest solution would be to not play the Canadian anthem in America or the American anthem in Canada. But that would be logical...

Especially since New Jersey doesn't have a state song...

If ever a state needed a state song, it's New Jersey.

Maybe something by Springsteen. It's either that or Bon Jovi.

Actually, we do have a state song in NJ - it's called "I'm from New Jersey" by Red Mascara. You can access the song at a number of sites on the web including this link

It's almost as embarassing as the NJ Devils......

In fact, we can go even further. Why bother with any anthems, especially in hockey. Are you trying to play the Canadian anthem for Canadians... Why not play the Swedish, Czech, Russian, Finnish, etc.... There are a few players from those countries on the teams too???

Just don't bother with it. It seems to cause nothing but problems.
