Or perhaps you're under analyzing the statistics.
The key words is Valuable. Did Albert Pujols get the hits when they mattered the most? Did Albert Pujols add JUST that much more to his team by being there and get them over the hump?
Stats count for a lot.
From there though, how do you determine? Well, stats are nice and help you find the top contenders to the award. From there, you look at who did that extra things...
Bonds got the key hits, Bonds carried his team on his back when he needed to. Bonds was determined come hell or high water he was going to get the Giants to the playoffs.
Pujols didn't. Advantage, Bonds.
