| #1 Posted on 9.10.04 0508.30 Reposted on: 9.10.11 0508.39 | Today was Election day in Australia, all the House of Reps seats and half the Senate seats. Depending on the opinion poll you saw it was either too close to call or a comfortable win for the incumbent government, led by Prime Minister John Howard. At this stage, it looks like it will be a comfortable win. Personally I hate this. I can't stand John Howard, I can't stand his policy on Iraq, which is basically Bush's. I think he's uncompromising when he should compromise and wishy washy when he should be firm. I hated the negative campaign ads: " if you don't vote for us , interest rates will go up." "Mark Latham (the opposition leader) has no experience" I had hoped that the Labor party had done enough to win, or at least do better than they seem to have done, but it seems Howard is untouchable right now. In the electorate I live in, the result is split 50/50 at the moment. I might have to go surfing tomorrow to make me feel better. | Promote this thread! | | Leviathan

I know that this seems to have got some attention in the US, but I honestly didn't even hear a thing about it in our domestic media.
In any case, the main opposition party seemed to chose not to make Iraq/the US alliance an issue. | Merc

THAT is what I find scary. The ACTU would be packing their dacks. There's all sorts of Industrial reform heading their way if it pans out like that. One of my mates worked in (Former) Democrat Senator John Cherry's office, it looks like he's looking for a new job.
My brother floated the theory last night that to be a successful minor party these days, you need an extreme view. Which would explain the Democrats demise. It also ties in with basically all the former One Nation vote going back to the coalition.

Yes, she also made some news here in Calgary a few weeks ago, encouraging Americans here to register to vote. Apparently there's a high concentration of USAers here in Cowtown. Shockingly, I've seen a couple of Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers around town. | Merc

It seems strange to me. We had huge anti war marches before the event, and people seemed pissed off that the PM went and jumped in with Bush anyway, but time seems to have eased the pain. The media made a bit of a ruckus about there being no WMDs but people just didn't seem to care enough. The embassy bombing didn't hurt the current government either. It made their Strong on National Security theme ring true. | Jobberman
