ABC is now apologizing. (ESPN.com) Meanwhile, this Houston Chronicle article says the Eagles/Cowboys game's ratings were down 7% from the previous week.
In the wake of many stations skipping on ABC's airing of Saving Private Ryan to avoid the wrath of Michael Powell and the FCC, this was just super, thanks for asking.
(EDIT: In the wake of the NFL and the Eagles trying to distance themselves from the whole thing, here's Philly.com's John Smallwood to properly throw 'em under the bus.)

| #3 Posted on 17.11.04 0903.15 Reposted on: 17.11.11 0904.02 | I'm sure the Eagles are so sorry that they'll stop selling their cheerleader lingerie calendars? Ha! Or stop outfitting their cheerleaders in barely-there outfits? Ha!
I'm sure ABC is so sorry that they'll stop focusing cameras on the cheerleaders during time outs? Ha!
I'm sure the NFL is so outraged that they'll stop taking sponsorships from beer companies that feature scantily clad women in their commercials? Or from sexual-dysfunction drugs? Ha! and Ha!
I have a hard time believing the Eagles didn't know what the commercial was going to be like before it aired. Maybe the NFL didn't know, but I have my doubts.
This whole "controversy" is ridiculous. Were any FCC rules violated? No. This was far less outrageous than what goes on during network soap operas during the afternoon. | Roy.

Unfortunately, I'm sure we'll see some complaints, which means the FCC has to investigate. I hope they see it as nothing more than a bad decision, but nothing indecent, but I'm not holding my breath. | Mayhem

I think it was out of place but like you estragand I am way more offended by Jim Belushi and every other hack ABC puts out to pimp their crappy shows. However with that being said I even think TO is a bit of a hypocrite for taking part in it when he has been spouting this god stuff recently in every interview, you cant have it both ways. Apparently the Eagles PR guy asked TO to do it and now the team has a no comment on the situation. You still have to love the guy as he gives you something different every week to talk about and boy did he have a great game. | Socks

Nicolette Sheridan is still on the show. The character that dies in the first episode (and becomes the narrator) is played by Brenda Strong.

| #20 Posted on 18.11.04 0616.02 Reposted on: 18.11.11 0625.09 | Now Dungy is making it a race issueOriginally posted by David Haugh for the Chicago Tribune/Baltimore Sun, 11/18/04 Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy thought actress Nicollette Sheridan revealed more than her body when she dropped a towel and jumped into the arms of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens in a promotion for Desperate Housewives during the opening of Monday Night Football.
The Indianapolis Colts coach believed the skit also exposed the hypocrisy of ABC Sports and the NFL and portrayed the league's players as "sexual predators" in a racially insensitive way.
"Any player, I would have been outraged, but the fact it was a black player, me, as an African-American man, I was hurt even more," Dungy told Indianapolis reporters after practice yesterday.
The rhetoric over the issue escalated at the end of a teleconference yesterday about Sunday's Bears-Colts game.
Dungy blasted the network and the league for the inappropriateness of the skit and the racial overtones it carried.
Apologies issued by ABC, the NFL and the Eagles did not go far enough in the eyes of Dungy, who brought up the Kobe Bryant rape case in raising objections to the portrayal of black athletes cavorting with white women.
"I was offended [because] No. 1, I think it was racial," Dungy said. "I don't think they would have had Bill Parcells or Andy Reid or one of the owners involved in that. I think it's just trying to stereotype our players and put them in a bad light."
Yikes.... |
