For those with digital cable, and probably satellite, who do not have the MLB Extra Innings Package, there is a free preview from Thursday July 12th through Wednesday July 18th, 2007. You don't get any Saturday afternoon games due to FOX's idiotic exclusivity window, but besides that you get almost every game, with the Phillies generally being the exception. After 3 days of baseball-less hell, it is a nice treat.

It is, indeed. I had the package last year, and really liked it, but couldn't justify the price tag this year. Thanks for the heads-up.

I have had the package for 3 years now (my annual birthday present to myself!). I love it, especially since I am keep up with my Cubbies better (damn them for moving a majority of their games off WGN). Does tend to drive the wife nuts as I flip between 5 or 6 games however...

I have it had for three seasons also (Annual Father's Day present to myself), because we know it's hard to follow the Royals from central Maine.

I also have issue with the no Saturday day games being shown on the package. Screw Fox.

It can't be that hard to follow the RoyaLLLLLLLLs...

"Did they lose?" "Yep"
"Did they lose yesterday?" "Yep"

How come the smartest baseball people seem to be Royals and Cubs fans?

It's easy to be a fan of teams that are on national TV constantly and win all the division and world titles and have four or five All-Stars.

It takes a true baseball fan to stick with your boys even though they drive you up a damn tree with their inability to get out of last place sometimes.

You realize you just described the Kansas City Royals from the mid 1970's through the late 1980's. Why they gave up the home field advantage they had with a big park and artifical turf is beyond me. Speed usually doesn't cost nearly as much as power. Willie Wilson leading off hitting a chopper past the shortstop that then zooms out to the wall for a lead-off triple and all hell starts to break loose. That's a happy flashback for Pieman.

One thing that's cut down during the freebie periods is the local commercials. A few are shown, but every commercial block during the preview contains a promo for the Extra Innings package. This week it's the "Empty Base-itis" promo. When the freebie period ends, these spots are replaced with regular commercials.

I get a kick out of seeing ads for Checkers Drive-Thru burgers in Florida, or how I can "Save Big Money at Mennards" in Wisconsin. Or all the chili ads from Cincinnati. It's also fun to see that just about every town has some goofball local car dealer.

In past years (notably 2003 and 2004), some cable companies offered special freebies for ordering the package. In those years, I got a PlayStation game and a World Series DVD as special offers. This year, when the cable package was tied up due to the threat of an exclusive deal with DirecTV, a few companies briefly offered a deal on MLB.TV.

So if you decide to order, call up and ask them if they're offering any special incentives.

Nice!

Just turned it on to check (Comcast Digital Cable) and they have a list of the upcoming games for Sunday... set amongst the same music as the Menu screen from the Big Lebowski DVD! Awesome!

I like it already.

Believe it or not, it can be harder to follow the Cubs when you live two hours away from Wrigley Field.

Tonight's game will be broadcast on ESPN, and locally in the Chicago area on WCIU. As I said, I live two hours away (not even in the friggin' state of Illinois). HOWEVER, my cable signal originates in Janesville, which is near the border. That signal not only comes toward me (and contains Milwaukee stations, not Chicago ones), but goes toward Chicago (where it must pick up Chicago feeds). Because of this, I get blacked out of ESPN telecasts of Cubs (and Sox) games.

Which means I get more of the Pat and Ron Show on WGN that I can take sometimes. I've usually heard ESPN Radio's "Call of the Day" the night before :-)
