Hi there. You may not be aware, but every week I like to look at EVERY new DVD and Blu-ray out in stores - well, listed on Amazon - and then organise them into neat little piles for you to totally ignore. Yes! And THIS is an example of THAT!
Wow! We've got only a slight 156 DVDs but a massive 68 Blu-rays! (Unfortunately, they're almost all classical music and you're not interested in 'em. But still...quite a ratio!)
Let's remind you how these DVD lists work...
INSTRUCTIONS AND KEY: Hover over a title to see Amazon's current price. Prices are almost always at their lowest BEFORE release, so preorder when possible to save big bucks!
All titles are schedule for release on TUESDAY (7/19) except where noted otherwise with a different date in parentheses.
Clicking on a title takes you to Amazon - if you decide to purchase, we get a small referral and YOU get the DVD! (Eventually!)
Titles in large italics are currently listed in the Top 24 sellers on Amazon. This list generally includes both formats.
Click on the IMDb icon to be taken to a movie's IMDb listing Click on the tv.com icon to be taken to a TV show's season's episode guide Click on the wwwfilm icon to be taken to a movie's website Click on the W to read threads started right here about the movies in question Click on Gorilla Monsoon's proboscis to read John Orquiola's movie review (if I could find one)
PICK OF THE WEEK
Skidoo (The W at Amazon) (1968) Jackie Gleason, Carol Channing, Groucho Marx (in his final role) as God and pretty much everybody in the entire 1968 world was in this, one of the goldarnest awfulest movies I have ever seen start to finish (via a really sketchy bootleg, so I almost feel I need to buy this to see what a "pristine" copy looks like) - directed by Otto Preminger - how Olive (olivefilms.com) keeps getting rights to films like this is baffling to me but we're all so fortunate (or not) that they are
MOVIES OF THE WEEK
THE BIG ONES
I like to try to list these in order of how well they're selling - at least this first section. That means you will learn very quickly that the biggest selling movie of the week IS...

Tekken (Japan/USA, 2010) Actually, this is live action! Let's NOT list it under "anime!" I don't know if anybody watched it, but in 2004 there were some incredulous reactions to news that it was going to be made - see The 7: Tekken (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Potiche (France, 2010) Catherine Deneuve (is still hot) Info on this film in English ("Potiche [Trophy Wife]")at Music Box Films (musicboxfilms.com) Potiche [Blu-ray]

Dark Days - 10th Anniversary Edition (2000) A startling documentary about life underground, literally - following the homeless living in the subway tunnels of NYC. Soundtrack by DJ Shadow. This version adds a second disc of...extra extras, I guess? Actually, it's laid out pretty well over at Oscilloscope (oscilloscope.net)
Dive!: Living off America's Waste (Dive! - 2010) After you throw away all that food - this dude eats it. And then makes a film about it. THAT'LL show YOU.

I had a Firefox tab open on this page on Amazon.com for weeks. I wasn't going to let myself to forget to buy this DVD the moment it came out. I didn't forget, and I'm now a proud owner of this DVD.
All of this, by the way, despite the fact that I already bought the entire series on DVD from eBay a few years ago. But those DVDs weren't quite the same, uh, quality. =)
The internet being a giant linksys-looking router that required a reboot was priceless. As was the Close Encounters reference. And the ectoplasm line was the best moment this season.
