A co-worker of mine has one of these models that gets outstanding mileage, and we were asking the same thing. Heck, the Geo Metro was no slouch when it came to mileage, now I'm lucky if my Aveo gets 35mpg. WTF?

(Yeah, I read the wiki article, too. Disgusting.)

The problem isn't technology. The problem is that, until recently, most consumers didn't base their car purchase decision on fuel efficiency. Now that gas prices are higher and people pay attention to fuel consumption, the car companies will make (and have made) more efficient cars. Also, safety standards have dictated heavier cars, which also hurts fuel mileage.

Besides, do you remember what people said about 50+ mpg cars when gas was cheap? The cars were slow, light/unsafe and ugly. If you build a 54 mpg car and no one buys it, then you'll quickly stop building that car. Now that people care about fuel efficiency again, the car companies will care too. It's all about $$$.

I doubt you could pass the current crash tests in a 1977 model. I heard that models from the 1990s don't cut it.

Big trucks and SUV make the rest of us wear body armor when driving If we were all driving cars wrapped in Saran Wrap, I bet we'd all get 100mpg.

Who's with me in the leftover mobiles? Anyone?

My bike, with it's 1700cc engine, gets about 40 MPG on a 4 gallon tank. That ain't not bad.

My first non-project bike got about 50 MPG. She was a Kawasaki Ninja. All black w/ purple rims. I had to name her Psylocke. Click Here (motorcycle.com)

We just purchased a 4-door Toyota Yaris (5-speed) for $15,000 for my wife and it is getting in the range of 43 mpg. Not a bad little car.

I helped an ex get a Yaris. A cobalt blue. She took me around in it and I was a tad bit jealous. It is a nice little car, especially for that price. My Saturn was about $18000 back in 2003 and I am lucky to even get close to 25 MPG highway.

The only negative is that it is not made here but in Japan. It would have been nice if it is one of the Toyotas made in the Good Old USA.

I like our Scion xB. It gets pretty good mileage and Aaron fits in it (he's 6'5") with headroom to spare. I like the Yaris, but I don't think it has enough head/leg room.

My wife and I are both about 5'6" and its great. Aaron would fit but I doubt he would like it, especially legroom. But it is surprisingly comfortable in the back. Not great but adequate.
