I was kind of let down this week. I thought the episode played off like a cheesey horror/thirller type of movie.

Ben sure wishes Smokey would've killed him. Follow John? Ben's worst nightmare.

And Ben sure remembered being brought to the Temple to be healed, contrary to what Richard said. The next Ben/Sayid encounter (hopefully we get one) will be a real test of "whatever happened, happened." Was Ben telling the truth about not knowing the O6'ers were in the DI?

This was a great mythology episode.

Ben got fired by the Island. He doesn't get to draw Island unemployment. Instead, he has to suffer a fate worse than death for him: being John Locke's lackey.

Locke has never been smarter, more perceptive, or more confident now that he's on his second life. It's a good reversal for him to be emboldened and Ben to be questioning and uncertain. Locke's also never been funnier. "I was really just looking for an apology." I liked him waving to Sun from outside the window.

Lapidus had a good zinger too: "As long as the dead guy says there's a reason, I guess everything is just peachy."

I almost fell for the heartwarming reunion between father and daughter-ghost. It was nice to see Alex again though; frightful glare in her eyes notwithstanding.

I liked the consistency of Ben having a soft spot in his heart for kids. Charlie Hume stopped him in his tracks from shooting Penny. Makes me wonder whatever happened to all those kids the Others kidnapped from Oceanic 815. I guess they're all playing whiffleball within the walls of the Temple.

Caesar, I won't miss you, my friend. Ben blowing him away was fantastic. Caesar sucked, but we didn't have to suffer him very long at all.

I can't get enough of Charles Widmore's story. He was banished by Ben for regularly leaving the Island and having a child. Supposedly. He could have been up to more than that. When Ben banished him, Alex looked about 5 or 6, which places the timeline at about 1993-1994. Penny is in her 30's. Now, was Widmore leaving the Island and traveling to the mainland in real time or was he time traveling when he left the Island? I question how he built and ran his international corporation while simultaneously Island hopping. Didn't Widmore once say he was looking for the Island for decades?

What does lie in the shadow of the statue?

We always knew there was an 'easy,' non-sub way for the Others to leave the Island --- Richard, Ethan and Tom all made it back-and-forth without the relative muss and fuss of the submarine. I'd guess that Widmore knew about it unbeknownest to the Hostiles/Others, and used it to build his relationship with Penny's mom, father Penny and build his corporation. It's quite possible that he was using some of the real-world-based Others (i.e. people like Ben's operative in the butcher shop) to manage things while he was back on the Island. I'm just curious about how Ben eventually found him out, since I'm suspecting Ben was the one who blew the lid on these activities and thus got Widmore ejected from Hostile leadership. And, since I just mentioned this 'easy way' back to the Island, I'd expect that this is probably how Desmond figures out a way back.

Also interesting, Widmore was banished post-Purge. Does this mean he's the one that ordered it? Maybe this was the act that got Ben looking for ways to replace Charles as the leader.

What does lie in the shadow of the statue?

Smells like carrots....wait, wrong riddle.

I think the answer is 'a dead man.' I'm guessing that the Monster is 'the shadow,' and if you lie to Smokey while it's judging you, you're finished. Maybe this is why Eko died --- perhaps he honestly was sorry at how things ended up with his brother, and thus Smokey-as-Yemi offed him.

With apologies to Gene Hackman, those few seconds of John Locke sitting behind the desk in a dress shirt and looking all evil was about the best on-screen Lex Luthor I've seen.

Et tu, Ben Linus? Thanks for blowing away Caesar. He ranked up there with Frogurt as another new character who was given a lot of build, but ended up worthless. We already have "dude" and "brother"... we don't need "my friend".

I loved this! Ben didn't kill Penny, nor did Desmond get majorly damaged in the attempt. Ben got a thumbs up from the Island. Alex yelling at him was wonderful. And he's now going to be the most loyal soldier Locke could ever possibly want. I'm happy!

"Shut up & stay here, Ethan." Tee-hee. We always knew Ethan was a bit Type A. And even better when we find that Alex' kidnapping was an ad hoc decision.

Do you think Michael Emerson & Terry O'Quinn had any idea what amazing roles they were signing up for?

It's now OK by me for TPTB to handle the TT stuff any way they want -- I'm just giddy about Ben being a good guy!

Did anyone else think the actor that played 40ish-year-old Widmore (long hair, talking to young Ben in the Others' camp) looked ridiculously close to identical to the actor that plays the oldest version of Widmore? I mean, I know they're supposed to play the same character so that's good and all, but that was just insane to me. Unless they actually ARE the same actor and it was just a fantastic hair and makeup job to make the actor look 30 years younger...

Ben blowing away Cesar shocked the crap out of me. I don't hate Cesar the way everyone else seems to for whatever reason, but I guess I'm not all that sad to see him go either. I'm just surprised he'd be killed off that way. I guess after all these seasons I shouldn't find these things shocking anymore.

Smokey-as-Alex was pretty intense. She was looking very sinister, and I half expected the writers to do the unthinkable and have her off Ben. That part was cool and all, but the part right before that where Ben was having all those flashbacks inside of the smoke-- ugh. That was just too cheesy for me to handle. That's the kind of thing I expect to see on Full House or 7th Heaven, not LOST. You know, if they showed guns on Full House or 7th Heaven.

Without having looked at the credits, I'd assume it's Alan Dale with good make-up and/or CGI.

I don't think we know FOR SURE Penny (and Charlie) are alive. I think there was more to that fight than what they showed tonight.

I was thinking that Alex was maybe one of the new island ghosts since she appeared after Smokey left the scene returned to his lair. I also was sure that there was going to be a shocking swerve and that she was going to suddenly kill Ben.

Once Ben showed mercy on Alex and her mom, I immediately thought "Ooooh, so Ben is a good guy after all." But then Alex made that very angry statement to Ben about how she knows that he plans on killing Locke again, so I guess were back to Ben still being a bad guy.

Ben's not evil. Just greedy. He can't be special-island boy if Locke is. As Locke observed himself, Ben doesn't like not knowing everything and having to take orders.

Interesting that Locke disappeared when Ben went to summon the smoke monster, and then disappeared again when Ben faced the smoke monster. Are we supposed to start wondering if Locke is smokey?

Locke's constant insistence that Ben face his judgment was amusing.

CESAR WAS A REDSHIRT!!! Hot damn!!! I've been totally expecting a Cesar flashback at some point this season, but I guess not. Well played, writers. Well played.

ILANA IS A... SOMETHING!!! THAT was an amusing twist. They captured Lapidus!!! Boo!

Big Bad, awesome theory about the answer to the monster question.

I loved how they started this episode by tying it to the last few that focused on Little Ben. Did Richard bring Little Ben to smokey, or did he bring him to the Temple 1/2 mile in from the wall? So whatever happened to Rousseau's crew happened by Smokey, but she accused Ben of being the carrier. Was that just her paranoia talking, or had she met Ben before? At least this confirmed that Ben and Rousseau had met at least once prior to her shooting him with an arrow in "One of Them." Michael Emerson trying to play mid-twenties was funny.

I loved this episode. I hope in a few weeks we get to find out what the NEW plane crash survivors are doing with cases of guns and a kidnapped Frank Lapidus.

Next week it seems like we get some action from Pierre Chang! I am passing the time while waiting for Wednesday by watching old episodes from Sci Fi that I taped, and it really is too bad they got rid of Mr. Eko. He was such an awesome character.

Close range with a sawed-off shotgun should be lethal, right? I guess it depends on whether the Island wants him dead or not. Sawyer and Locke and young Ben have survived getting shot. Ethan, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby, The Picketts, Mr. Friendly, Rousseau, Karl, and Alex, not so much. (Also, all the red shirts that followed Locke to New Otherton.)

So 2004 Danielle found Henry Gale/Ben Linus in one of her traps and instead of torturing him into getting Alex back, she gives him to the hapless 815 crew?

Well, Danielle knew exactly who she had in her trap. Maybe Benry promised to return Alex in exchange for Danielle not blowing his cover to Sayid. From 2x14, One of Them (lostpedia.wikia.com)...

[We see someone hanging from a tree in a net trap.]

VOICE: Hey! Hey, over here. Please, help me.

    [COMMERCIAL BREAK]

    VOICE: Help me!

DANIELLE: Don't believe a word he says.

    VOICE: Hey!

    DANIELLE: He's one of them.

VOICE: I have no idea what she's talking about. She's crazy.

SAYID: How long has he been up there?

VOICE: Since last night. Please, just cut me down. My name is Henry Gale. I'm from Minnesota. Please.

    DANIELLE: He's lying.

SAYID: [pulling out his knife] I'm going to cut him down.

    DANIELLE: Don't.

    GALE: Thank you.

DANIELLE: You're making a serious mistake.

SAYID: [after cutting him down] It's okay, it's okay. You're alright. You're alright. Hold on. Take it easy.

[Danielle prepares her cross bow. Gale sees her.]

    GALE: [running] No.

    SAYID: Wait. Danielle, don't!

[Danielle shoots Gale in the shoulder. Sayid runs to him.]

SAYID: You could have killed him.

DANIELLE: If I wanted to kill him, I would have killed him.

SAYID: You shot this man with no provocation.

DANIELLE: He is one of them. Tie him up. You should take him to your doctor. He's no good to you dead.

SAYID: [tying him up] And then what?

DANIELLE: You talk to him, Sayid. As I recall that is what you do. But know this -- he will lie -- a long time. He will lie.

[Sayid starts carrying him back to camp.]

Fortunately they just recently re-aired that episode. (SciFi or G4, not sure which.) She specifically went & fetched Sayid, the professional torturer. He's infinitely better equipped to get the truth out of Benry than Danielle herself is. During the trek to the trap, we all got onto the same page that Sayid completely blamed the Others for Shannon's death, & at that time, it was really fresh for him. So, he was motivated. The real problem was that Sayid opted to take Benry back to the Losties' camp where everybody else could interfere, rather than just handling business in private anywhere else on the Island.

I'd also forotten that in that exchange with Danielle, Benry got an arrow through the upper chest. Reminded me somehow of Ben shooting Locke, but he survived because the bullet went through the spot where his missing kidney should have been.

Interesting point. My first take was just that this was a private ritual that nobody else should be privy to. But, I think you may be heading in an interesting direction here.

The other little thing that I found amusing is that, for the most part, Locke has been generally Island-grubby, with sweat & scrapes & Island dirt all over his clothes & face. And, for the most part, Ben managed to be tidy, clean & groomed. Ever since they've been back, Locke has been gliding through the Island, immaculate in his suit. And poor Ben is the one who's banged up, dirty, sweaty & generally schmutzig.

If considerng it as an option is sufficient to make you a bad guy, I'm pretty sure that Hurley is the only good guy on the entire show! :-)

I'm working on the assumption that Ilana & some number of the Ajira-tailies are Widmore's army. And they had a whole cargo container of armaments pre-loaded on the plane. If you know the password you're in the club. But that's just an impression.

A thought I had from this episode...Ben killed Locke because it had to be done to get them back to the island. I figured it was because they had a dead Christian the first flight and this was a substitute of sorts. But now, maybe it was just because the island wanted it that way so it could resurrect Christian/Locke to be something more? Or maybe you just gotta have a dead guy to get there this way....I dunno.

Point being, perhaps Jack's dad didn't drink himself to death. I can only imagine what happens if Jack finds out it was Ben/Charles that really killed Christian.

(I'm having a blonde moment -- little help please:
How did Locke get the name "Eloise Hawking"? Was it from Christian?
---------
Never mind -- found it -- it was Christian in "This Place is Death":

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Hello, John.
LOCKE: [Amazed] You! What are you doing down here?
CHRISTIAN: I'm here to help you the rest of the way.
LOCKE: I... I don't understand.
CHRISTIAN: You came to see me in the cabin. You asked me how to save the island and I told you you had to move it. I said that you had to move it, John.
LOCKE: But Ben said he knew how to do it! He told me that I had to stay here and lead his people.
CHRISTIAN: Since when did listening to him get you anywhere worth a damn? The good news is that you’re here now. You ready to go?
LOCKE: I don't... I don't... I... I don’t know... what to do once I get there.
CHRISTIAN: There's a woman living in Los Angeles. Now once you get all your friends together--and it must be all of them, every one who left--and once you've persuaded them to join you, this woman will tell you exactly how to come back.
LOCKE: Who is she?
CHRISTIAN: Her name is Eloise Hawking.

Hmmmm - I'm still not convinced that Christian is really a reliable Jacob representative ...
