Jaguar's TEMPEST game was what made me buy that system.

I've never been an advocate of early console adoption, as prices are high and games are generally iffy until the second or third wave arrives. (My exception that proves the rule is the Dreamcast, which had a fairly strong launch but then had little else for the next 6-8 months.)

Actually, for my money (not literally) the 360 launch lineup is quietly turning out to be one of the highest caliber ones ever - unfortunately for MS, the keyword is "quietly." The system itself is getting hyped like crazy, but they haven't pushed any of the games very hard. If they just had one absolutely must-have game, this would be pretty hard to beat. As it is, pretty much every game is averaging in the 7 to 9 range as far as scores. Now that Perfect Dark Zero has been reviewed by several reputable sites and it turns out it's actually quite good, this lineup is really strong. There aren't many filler titles like Fantavision (PS2 launch) or utter crap like Fusion Frenzy (XBox launch) cluttering the shelves. The quality level of the launch is the highest I can remember, maybe even surpassing Dreamcast.

Regardless, I still don't have a burning desire to own one RIGHT NOW, but if this keeps up even for a small length of time, it's going to be pretty hard to resist for much longer.

Soul Calibur and Hydro Thunder were two of the best games ever, and both were DC launch titles. The Sonic game at launch was also strong, and NFL2K was mind blowing to me at the time.

Speed Devils was OK and Tokyo Speed Racer was OK. Graphically both were dominant at launch. I'm pretty sure those were all launch games.

Generally speaking, and I say this from experience, it's stupid to buy at launch. Between system price and (usually) lackluster launch titles, you're better off waiting six months to a year, and enjoying the swan song of the existing console generation. Because we usually get new consoles just about the time designers figure out what to do with the existing hardware, the last games on any system are usually pretty amazing.

Edit: I say usually lackluster launch titles, but there usually are one or two really solid launch games for any system. I just mean it's not much of a selection.

That being said, it should be noted that Perfect Dark Zero , Project Gotham Racing 3, and Call of Duty 2 are AMAZING games. NBA 2k6 is as good as its last-gen counterparts, plus it has vastly superior graphics. I haven't played any of the other launch titles, but with the exception of the EA games (which all had a lot of stuff cut out just to make it to launch on time), the general consensus seems to be that the 360 launch titles are fantastic, or at lesat much better than your usual crop of launch titles.

If I read correctly, the memory cards for the original Xbox aren't compatible with the 360, which I think is bogus.
Well it's no more bogus than the PS2's memory card/controller/multitap compatibility mess.
What are you talking about, man? The memory cards for the PS1 were 100% compatible with the PS2. I'd never had a single compatibility problem using a PSone controller, either.

The game compatibility thing irks me. All the original PSone games (with a few exceptions) were totally compatible with the PS2, out of the box.

I liken the compatibility problems for the PS2 as a minor inconvenience, but this problem for the Xbox 360..is just pathetic.

Somebody never played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The first one won't recognize my saved game on the PS2 card, and none of my other PS1 games have had this issue.

I owned THPS1...and never had any problems whatsoever with, even using my memory card on a friends' PSone and then taking it back to my PS2.

My problem with the 360 is pretty simple. Xbox came out a year after PS2 and the 360 is coming out a year ahead of PS3. I was a loyal Xbox owner but I think I am going to try the PS3 this time simply due to the console's apparent lifespan. Microsoft felt the need to put out 360 first even though they had the most powerful current system. I'm sure once they find themselves out gunned by the PS3 they are going to be itching to pump out another. Basically, I would rather have to buy a system every six years compared to every four.

PS1 needs a multitap for 4 players.

PS2 needs a multitap.

PS2 controllers don't work on PS1 multitaps. That's fine.

But PS1 controllers don't work on PS2 multitaps.

Unacceptable.

If you had a 4 player PS1 game when the PS2 came out, got rid of the PS1 and bought the PS2 you had yourself a one player game. Unless you went hunting for the multitap for the PS2 and paid its original $40 price tag.

I don't want to get into the memory card fiasco. The multitap crap was bad enough, as Sony idiotically insisted on two controller ports only even though the 64 and the Dreamcast were already offering four ports.

So if the PS3 has four ports... welcome to two generations ago Sony.

TWO GENERATIONS BEHIND. That's almost ten years. THAT is a mess.

The WiFi wireless controllers for the Xbox 360 (you can buy a battery pack that gets recharged through a USB cable that attaches to the system) are awesome.

My buddies and I have been playing 4-way Perfect Dark Zero with two wired and two wireless controllers. I don't miss multi-taps and that PS1/2 problem that AJ is talking about pissed me off too.

Well, then you definitely want to steer clear of Microsoft consoles from now on. From what I understand, they plan on going with an aggressive console cycle from this point out, and they are planning the next iteration of the Xbox for 2009 (and continuing to put out a new one every 4 years). The noted benefit of this plan is that the price of the current-gen console is supposed to drop every year.

Well, it's seven now, so if anything they're OVER compensating.

I've never owned a multitap and I doubt if I ever would've used it if it came with one. Almost all of PS2's really good games are built for single player, which is perfectly fine with me. I've got a GameCube for party games and that stuff.

PS2 party (4 player) games suck, if they didn't, the multitap thing would be a problem for someone besides me.

Also, they owe us two ports for each system as well as the now standard 4, so the PS3 falls one port short of repaying us.
