(For previous weeks' releases, click on the "DVD" thread icon, or use these individual links: week beginning 1/2 - 1/9 - 1/16 - 1/23 - 1/30 - 2/6 - 2/13 - 2/20 - 2/27 )

Hello.

We ended up with 324 releases this week! I have watched....practically none of them! However, I HAVE examined the listings and when the listings don't help, I've gone to other sources. There's probably a greater percentage of blurbs here than I've done yet. I really have no idea why, or what compels me, or or or or. I guess I'm hoping for YOUR FEEDBACK (or even purchases!)

As usual, chime in with your two cents if you're particularly excited by any inclusions on this list, if you would like to add your recommendation to any particular item, if you're easily offended by any item or my commentary thereof, or however your fancy is grabbed.

This week, I add tv.com links for the TV listings - usually you can glean the episodes included with a single click on the icon!

Prices may appear when you hover over an Amazon link!

Surprisingly, no Blu-Ray or HD DVD listings this week. Unless they've been segregated out to a place where they're not showing up for me...anyway, nobody has yet 'fessed up to owning a player...

Once again I lead off by making a completely arbitrary

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Electric Company's Greatest Hits & Bits (The W at Amazon) Seminal PBS reading/phonics show provides archive material for yet another compilation from SHOUT! factory - FINALLY we get the Tom Lehrer "ly" song - Kim's choice is the "tion" song ("t-i-o-n / tion, tion tion tion..." - aired as a PBS pledge drive special in 2006 (and was a premium if you pledged an ungodly sum of money - I chose to tape it instead ;-) )... This version is about 50% longer than what aired on TV

HONOURABLE MENTION: A Perfect Fake (Documentary Channel (Canada), 2004) Documentary (duh) about men who reject having sex with real women for...well, you can probably figure it out. Those wacky Canadians! Click here to learn more! (documentarychannel.ca)

This week I separated out the first page (12 items) of top sellers - in this case, top pre-orders - I'll put them on/near the top of the page. Let me know if this is interesting/useful/confusing!

AMAZON'S TOP 12 PREORDERS:
Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Widescreen Edition) (2006)
Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Full Screen Edition) I haven't seen it, I don't WANT to see it, I know, I'm the only one
Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) (1953) Another escapee from the Disney vault - but not for long!
Stargate Atlantis - The Complete Second Season (2005-6) It just goes to show - a lotta nerds shop at Amazon - thanks, nerds!
Northern Exposure - The Complete Sixth Season (1994-5) aka the last season - Janine Turner: "FINALLY I can grow my hair back out!" Me: "NOOOOOOOOOOOO"
South Park - The Complete Ninth Season (2005) Mr. Garrison becomes Mrs. Garrison - hopefully (surely) "Trapped in the Closet" and "Bloody Mary" are included uncut
Hawaii Five-0 - The Complete First Season (1968-9) Hey remember the ezboard? We had that guy whose username was "Kam Fong as Chin Ho?" Whatever happened to that guy? I probably pissed him off. I piss them ALL off eventually
Night of the Comet (1984) One of my wife's favourite movies - and apparently a lot of other people's as well
Doctor Who - The Sontaran Experiment (UK, 1975) Second Tom Baker serial is only a two-parter - Styre is an ugly dude - but Harry is dreamy
Moonlighting - Season Five - The Final Season (1988-9) To fully experience what trying to follow this show was like, give yourself about six weeks between epsiodes to account for "production delays" - ah ha ha
Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (UK/USA, 1951) Apparently lots of people have been waiting for THIS classic - but most of them are in the UK!
Doctor Who - The Invasion (UK, 1968) Eight part Patrick Troughton/Cybermen epic features first appearance of UNIT - restored version includes animation/narration to replace 2 "lost" episodes and HEAVY (almost heroic) restoration of the remaining six

ONLY OTHER "BIG" MOVIE OUT THIS WEEK:
Let's Go to Prison (Rated & Unrated Versions) (2006) Will Arnett, Dax Shepard, Chi McBride, David Koechner - directed by Bob Odenkirk - Released in November and bombed with lightning speed

HEY, REMEMBER THE 80s?:
In addition to "Night of the Comet" (above), a lot of - let's say "cult classics" from the 80's are out (or back) this week on DVD:
Private School (1983) Phoebe Cates, Betsy Russell, Matthew Modine, Sylvia Kristel - teens and sex and comedy in a 1980s movie? Unthinkable!
Death Wish Club (1983) One of the films later stitched into "Night Train for Terror"
Revenge of the Nerds: Panty Raid Edition (1984) Apparently was going to be called the "We got BUSH!" edition but somebody thought better of it
Revenge of the Nerds: The Atomic Wedgie Collection above, along with II: Nerds in Paradise (1987) , III: The Next Generation (FOX, 1992) AND IV: Nerds in Love (FOX, 1994) - even ACTUAL nerds don't need all four movies
Solarbabies (1986) Another 1980s cult classic is out this week - Jami Gertz, Lukas Haas, Jason Patric, Adrian Pasdar and many rollerskates

OTHER NOTABLE MOVIES:
John and Mary (1969) Dustin Hoffman, Mia Farrow - What happens the day after a one night stand?
Cinderella Liberty (1973) James Caan, Marsha Mason and a lot of people you'd expect in a 1970s film about shore leave in Seattle turning into LOVE - music by Paul Williams
The Other Side of Midnight (1977) aka "the other half of a Star Wars trivia question" - I'll just steal from the IMDb here: "Because of a phenomenal success of the book, 20th Century Fox was sure that this was going to be a huge hit at the box office. At the same time there were such low expectations surrounding Star Wars that most theaters refused to book the film. So the distributor at Fox came up with the idea of a package deal: telling theater chains that if they wanted this movie they had to book Star Wars first. This movie went on to become a box office dud while Star Wars went on to become one of the most successful films of all time." Based on the Sidney Sheldon novel
Manitou (1978) Tony Curtis IMDb says: "A psychic's girlfriend finds out that a lump on her back is a growing reincarnation of a 400 year-old demonic Native American spirit." I sure couldn't come up with anything better than THAT.
Dead Girls Don't Tango (1992) PROBABLY not Karen Black's greatest triumph

WWE:
WWE - Mick Foley Greatest Hits & Misses - A Life in Wrestling (Hardcore Edition) A third disc is added with:
MICK FOLEY vs. RANDY ORTON WWE Backlash 4/18/04
MICK FOLEY vs. EDGE WrestleMania 22 4/2/06
MICK FOLEY & EDGE vs. TERRY FUNK & TOMMY DREAMER ECW One Night Stand 6/11/06
MICK FOLEY vs. RIC FLAIR SummerSlam 8/20/06

...and "alternative" commentary by Foley & Joey Styles

You know, don't buy it at Amazon - buy it at WWE Shop (wweshop.com) - we get no referral but YOU get a great shirt

WWE - Wrestlemania III (Championship Edition) Amongst the new extras is POP UP TRIVIA. OH BOY! Again, you'd be better off skipping A and going to WWE Shop (wweshop.com) for the added shirt

GORGEOUS LADIES OF WRESTLING:
GLOW: Early Years 1 Just think - David McLane is STILL making money off this library (maybe)

ELVIS IS ALIVE...ON DVD:
Elvis Lives: The 25th Anniversary Concert "Live" From Memphis (DVD) I'd never heard of this 2002 concert where Elvis appeared "via video" while former bandmates and associates played - so I asked resident expert FLEA - he said it aired on PBS during pledge drive time.
Elvis Lives- The 25th Anniversary Concert "Live" From Memphis (DVD Jewel Case) I can't tell you what's different about this one (unless the first one is NOT in a jewel case)
Elvis Lives: the 25th Anniversary Concert - or this one (import?)

He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley (Vol. 1-2) Now THIS, I bet, is really good - Elvis totally loved the Lord, y'all

MORE MOVIES!

KINO CINEMA:
Slippin': Ten Years With the Bloods Documentary shot over a ten-year period after the LA riots in 1992 - you know what, go straight to Kino (kino.com) for a better price and more details
Quiet Flows the Don (Тихий Дон/Tikhiy Don - Soviet Union, 1957) 5 1/2 hours, 4 discs - the "Soviet Gone with the Wind" - Kino (kino.com)
Commissar (Kommisar - Soviet Union, 1967) Unlike the old VHS, now available in widescreen Kino (kino.com)

HEY, HOW ABOUT ANOTHER RELEASE OF:
Dude Where's My Car (2000) Apparently this is the "Fox Home Entertainment" release - as opposed to the "20th Century Fox" release - sure, why not

NEW VERSION OF STUFF YOU ALREADY BOUGHT:
The Full Monty - Fully Exposed Edition (1997) Now with enough extras to warrant a second disc

SEE THE FUTURISTIC ARM WRESTLING:
Hands of Steel (Vendetta Dal Futuro - Italy, 1986) also known as "Atomic Cyborg" - may have inspired "Over the Top"

FURN FILMS:
China 9 Liberty 37 (Amore, Piombo E Furore - Italy/Spain, 1978) Spaghetti Western
Strange Circus (Kimy Na Skasu - Japan, 2005)
Dracula - Masterpiece Theatre (BBC Wales, 2006) Another production of the story you may have seen before
Empire in Africa (France/USA, 2006) Documentary of civil war-torn Sierra Leone and the role (or lack thereof) played by the international community
Requiem (Germany, 2006) IFC Films brings you "the film that inspired The Exorcism of Emily Rose"
Confetti (UK, 2006) Mostly improvised mockumentary follows three couples competing in a "Most Original Wedding of the Year" contest - hey, Martin Freeman's in it!

STRAIGHT TO DVD, OR NEARLY:
Street Life (2004) Is it really thuggin' when your gritty urban drama is set in...Memphis?
Monster of Phantom Lake (2006) Black and white spoof filmed in (get this) Arden Hills, MN
Death Row (2006) Jake Busey, Stacy Keach, Jamie Mann - documentary crew trapped in abandoned prison - also known as (get this) "Haunted Prison" when it aired on Sci Fi
Kettle of Fish (2006) Matthew Modine, Gina Gershon - released in three theaters during one week in October and raked in an ASTONISHING $7,196 (boxofficemojo.com) in gross - now, in its defense, I don't know if I'VE ever made that much in a week
A Brush With Death (2006) Five cheerleaders decide to spend the night in a haunted house, because they are idiots - don't miss the trailer (stainlessfilm.com)
Walkout (HBO, 2006) Directed by Edward James Olmos, based on the story of Alexa Vega, who organised a protest of East LA high school students in 1968
Fast Food Nation (2006) Ensemble cast (Wilder Valderrama, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Greg Kinnear, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Willis, Patricia Arquette, and even more - Avril Lavigne - geez, EVERYBODY'S in this) in fictional narrative based on work of nonfiction by Eric Schlosser - say, did you know eating nothing but Big Macs will kill you? Thanks, Hollywood!
Between the Walls (2006) Son finds father made audio recordings of everything that happened in his childhood home days before house is repossessed - and something about God
Marcus (2006)
Delirium
Going to School in India Director Lisa Heydlauff answers the question "How do children go to school in India?" - DVD accompaniment to the book
Hitchhiker Group of women decide to pick up hitcher, because THEY are idiots - I like how they say unrated director's cut (theasylum.cc) as if there were other versions of this movie floating around in the industry
Decoys - The Second Seduction I am guessing you will be utterly confused if you haven't seen the first one
Cult Taryn Manning, Rachel Miner I'm thinking the deeper the cleavage you put on the box, the worse horror film it is
Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield
Machine Crime drama shot in 2003, except for the parts with Michael Madsen - and now Madsen gets to dominate the cover - hmmmm, sounds like a cluster

DODGY RELEASES OF THE WEEK:
Heroes of Telemark (1965) Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris, Ulla Jacobsson - looks like a cut-rate redub of a VHS tape onto DVD - probably avoid it unless you're dying to see it
The Lighthorsemen (Import) (Australia, 1987) New "import" of questionable character (ie full screen) of a movie not yet released on DVD
A Little Romance Looks more like "Always Say Goodbye" to me (1996) - Marcia Cross, Polly Draper, Phil Brock - rerelease with a different name from the same distributor?

COLLECTIONS/BOX SETS OF THE WEEK:
Literary Classics Collection (Madame Bovary (1949), Captain Horatio Hornblower, The Three Musketeers (1948), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937 and 1952 Versions), Billy Budd) - What do these movies all have in common besides being big movies? They are all based on notable literary works! Well....notable to some people. These titles are also available individually - "Hornblower" is up in the Top 12; here are the rest:
Madame Bovary (1949) Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louis Jourdan
The Three Musketeers (1948) Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Angela Lansbury, Frank Morgan, Vincent Price...the list of stars goes on and on
The Prisoner of Zenda (1937 and 1952 Versions) two versions of one script, fifteen years apart, proving that the idea of the remake didn't originate recently after all - of course, even the remakes were better back then
Billy Budd (UK, 1962) Directed by and starring Peter Ustinov - oh and Terence Stamp's first appearance (my wife just sighed)

The Hemingway Classics Collection (The Sun Also Rises (1957) / A Farewell to Arms (1957) / The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952) / Under My Skin (1950) / Adventures of a Young Man (1962))

PARAMOUNT TRIPLE FEATURES:
Beverly Hills Cop Collection (Beverly Hills Cop / Beverly Hills Cop II / Beverly Hills Cop III) (1984, 1987, 1994) Good Lord, they're REALLY developing another sequel for 2009 release? Does the world really NEED "Beverly Hills Cop IV?" Do I already know the answers to the questions I am asking?
Edge of Your Seat Collection (Kiss the Girls / Along Came a Spider / Double Jeopardy)
Audrey Hepburn Collection (Breakfast at Tiffany's / Roman Holiday / Sabrina)
INCORRECT USE OF THE WORD "ULTIMATE" OF THE WEEK: Samuel L Jackson Ultimate Collection (Coach Carter / Shaft / Rules of Engagement)

ECHO BRIDGE SCRAPES THE BARREL:
Ivana Trump's For Love Alone (CBS, UK/USA, 1998) TV movie based on the novel by Ivana Trump (Ivana Trump wrote a NOVEL?)
Interstate 84 (2000) Kevin Dillon's always dreamy
Spies, Lies, & Naked Thighs (CBS?, 1988) Harry Anderson, Ed Begley Jr. - if that doesn't scream out "TV movie cast" I don't know what does
Alone in the Neon Jungle (CBS?, 1988) Suzanne Pleshett's a lady cop - Jon Tenney, Danny Aiello - don't blink or you'll miss Tony Shalhoub

MOVIES/TV WHICH MUST HAVE COME INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN:

Buster Crabbe Collection 12 "Flash Gordon" episodes and seven movies - they promise "over 11 hours!"
Nasa Collection-Volume 1 21 NASA films - over 10 hours
Sonny Chiba Collection 9 movies - over 13 hours - I guess they figure you'll pay $9.99 sight unseen but really, a list WOULD be nice

YOU DECIDE WHICH IMDB ENTRY IT IS:
Moment After 2:Awakening (2006) Could be or perhaps - I know, who cares, right?

WEIRDEST ITALIAN HORROR TRIPLE FEATURE OF THE WEEK:
Euro Fiends From Beyond the Grave - The Faceless Monster (Gli Amanti d'oltretomba - Italy, 1965) , Satanik (Italy/Spain, 1968) , and The Red Headed Corpse (La Rossa Dalla Pelle Che Scotta - Italy, 1971)

ET CETERA!

MOSTLY MYSTERY RELEASES FROM TIMELESS MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT:
War of the Worlds I have no idea which one this is, but since "Timeless Media Group" is responsible for it, I would bet on something close to public domain
Dracula's Curse Again, this could be a couple different films, but no help at the Timeless website (timelessmusic.com) - you know what, let's blow through the rest of their releases
When a Killer Calls (2006)
King of the Lost World (2005) The gorilla on the cover is NOT Bruce Boxleitner (I think)

MYSTERY RELEASE OF THE WEEK:
F Bomb - Sorry, the Velocity Home Entertainment website (velocityhomeentertainment.com) is down - these are the people who distributed "Farce of the Penguins," if that helps give you any idea

EN ESPAOL:
El Marido De Mi Novia (1951)
La Golfa Del Barrio (1983) COVER OF THE WEEK - now this is how you sell a pelicula, am I right hombres?
Cuna De Lobos (1986-7) Another nice cover which really captures the essence of the telenovela format, at least if all the ads I've ever seen are to be believed - hmm, if they really manage to compress a 120 episode run into just under 12 hours on 3 discs, I guess there IS a lot of filler in the format
Al Otro Lado (2004)
Serenata en San Juan - Melina Len y Los Tri-O - companion to the CD?
Mis Exitos En Video Priscilla y sus Balas de Plata

'Presencing,' a blend of 'presence' and 'sensing,' refers to the ability to sense and bring into the present one's highest future potential. Scharmer encourages co-creation of a future that depends on each of us." You don't say!

I may be wrong, but at some point I thought David McClane sold the GLOW library to Ursula Hayden, or Babe the Farmer's Daughter as she was known. She was selling copies of GLOW shows for a while.

I would like to think that David "HELLO, HELLO" McClane is not getting any residuals beyond maybe getting a small check as being a member of the "talent" back then.

Does the longer version have any mention of Spider-Man? that seemed to be a glaring omission on the PBS Special.

If it's the same GLOW DVD I bought at a flea market a couple of years ago that had the first five or six episodes on it (and why wouldn't it be? Who would spend any kind of money repackaging GLOW?)

There's a HORRIFIC injury during a match between a lifeguard and someone else. (I know, but it's been a few years since I saw it) In the match, the lifeguard's left elbow completely inverts during an arm-drag attempt on her opponent. It wouldn't have been so bad, but apparently they filmed these shows live to tape, and rather than drop the whole show, they stayed on the girl screaming in pain, while replaying the injury for around 10-15 minutes, until the paramedics finally got down to the ring and carted her off.

If you think WCW replaying Sid's leg breaking coming off the top rope was bad, you ain't seen nothin'.

Without disagreeing on the dodginess factor this is a GREAT war movie about a group of Australian cavalry during the First World War and how their untit commander had to completely invent new tactics to keep the unit relevant. It works a little bit like a sports movie with the irascible coach forcing his men to do wacky things that all make sense later. Bittersweet ending related to their big victory which ended up being credited to Lawrence's Arabs when they actually only entered the city after the Australians had secured it. The Aussies are still pissed about it. Just ask them sometime.

You have never heard of Celeste, really? She is sort of legend (i.e. my age/OLDer) of the industry.

Link to her "bio" on the Wicked Pictures site with picture
http://www.wickedpictures.com/bio/a-e/Celeste.html
Do I really need to say NSFW? It's actually pretty innocuous but your IT guy might be curious why you are visiting wicked's site

her English wiki page is DUH-leted and marked for quick redeletion, but she has a French wiki site. Ooh La La!
She also has an imdb listing but no picture. (Which confuses me honestly I would have thought that porn stars are all up on this Intramet thing and make sure that their listings on things like IMDB are all up to date. I mean you never know when some geek with a crush on you is going to get a TV show and you get casted in a cameo ala X-Files (Ashlyn Gere I think and maybe a couple of others.)

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celeste

hmmm. Born in 1972, so she is 35, four years younger than me. Fits the MILF category though because she has a son.

All of this assumes that it is in fact the Celeste in this film as opposed to a Celeste.

I am a little confused by the SMUT on amazon. Given how much is actually released on a weekly basis, you would think that there would be tons on this list. Or does Amazon have a no-smut policy and this is just what gets through the filter? And is that why some things end up falling off the list afterwards?

Longer than an hour but less than a week. ;-) Usually work is slower so I get more done earlier (ten here, ten there) but between our snow emergencies and me being sick, it/I was strung out a little longer - otherwise it would have been up earlier on Friday (although I'm considering changing the timing of the post to a time when more people might be online to vote it up on Digg et al)

I'll tell after it arrives and I watch it. :)

I know exactly what episode you're talking about because I got THAT DVD as a gift one Christmas. I'm working from a fuzzy memory as well, but I *believe* those particular episodes are from the second go round. I'm kinda hoping the fact that it's called "early years" means it's actually earlier. My brother-in-law is the GLOW expert; we'll see if he ends up with a copy or not.

(I just went back and found MY copy - it's called "Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling Volumes 1 & 2" and looks exactly like this entry (The W at Amazon) - the user review says matches ARE from Season 1, so don't listen to me. Also, the girl who broke her arm was Susie Spirit!)

That's my educated guess - I'm always surprised when I see stuff like that showing up on Amazon. Especially with a cover! Think of the children!

All the smut that bleeds through tends to be of the softcore variety (Playboy videos, Girls Gone Wild, etc.), but anything with hard sex content is probably filtered pretty easily.

Celeste is still active in the adult industry, but not as an actress. She's a fairly prominent director, though, contracted to Digital Playground. Her stuff is very couples friendly, with all the sex sounds filtered out and covered with techno or mood music, and she has an extreme fondness for slow motion. Good cinematography, though.

These are the useless things you learn when you spend three years working in adult retail.

CBS Evening News (December 27, 2002)

What possibly could be going on here? I mean, I've read the DVDMB long enough to know somewhere out there, there's someone who's faithfully taping every single episode of their most favorite newscast and archiving them "just in case" and I'm sure there are requests for copies of episodes where someone's mom/dad/daughter/dog/cat/llama was on for two seconds.

Maybe, if you can do it cheap enough, there's some value in putting a week's worth of commercial free episodes on a single DVD in case someone wants a copy.

But these appear to be half hour newscasts, with no description of what's actually on the show), being sold for $18.

My hunch is they've ALWAYS been available from whoever currently has rights to the CBS News Archives through some (more difficult to get at) means, but someone is now making them available via Amazon. Maybe CBS is attempting to mine a new revenue stream? I hear they need it... (or was it the Viacom half that needed help)

EDIT: Maybe here (bbcmotiongallery.com)?

Thanks for the listings--I clicked over from Fark.com's classified, and read all nine or ten threads. I just bought the *cough*Dokken*cough* DVD through the link, and wanted to let you know.

Funniest movie I've seen at least a year, maybe more. There weren't really any standout moments for me, but that's just because the entire movie was consistently excellent.
