Hello.
July continues to be an "easy" month with light schedules by the majors, and a lot of dross being snuck out by the fly-by-nighters. Once again, we bring you everything Amazon is offering for 7/22 (and the six days after, where noted) - this week that means 239 DVDs, a baker's dozen Blu-Ray releases, and ONE (count it - one) UMD for PSP.
Listings, as usual, are fleshed out with relevant IMDb or tv.com listings when I can find them, links to distributors, a lotta bad trailers, and even more bad jokes.
If something here excites you, won't you please let me know? (Or....you could click on it and buy it, even. We get, like, A DIME if you do that!)
Let's kick it right off with the
PICK OF THE WEEK
Electroma (The W at Amazon) (France/USA, 2006) Daft Punk's vision FINALLY realised on American DVD, years later - I don't even know if it's all that good, but I'm really interested in finally seeing it myself (since I wasn't interested enough to seek it out via other means...if you catch my drift) - more info at www.electroma.org and (ugh) Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org)
We have a runner-up pick this week as well:
Comedy Central's TV Funhouse (Comedy Central, 2000-1) Wow - I never expected to see Doug and the Anipals on DVD, but here they are - with Robert Smigel commentary track! Needless to say, if you like Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, you have already pre-ordered this one - but there's a whole lot more here than Triumph. (Thank God for that.)
TV OF THE WEEK - TUNE IN TUESDAY
Robot Chicken: Star Wars (Adult Swim, 2007) Seems kinda pricy for 23 minutes, but I'm hoping there's ANY sort of extras - rumours of "hours of extras" aren't quite as reassuring as ANY official source actually confirming that...
Las Vegas: Season Five (NBC, 2007-8) May include racy non-network-sanctioned stuff (in the hopes that you'll forgive any replaced music...do they still do THAT too?)
L.A. Ink: Season 1 (TLC, 2007) Tattoos suck. There, I said it.
Masters of Horror: Season Two Box Set (Showtime, 2006-7) 13 discs IN A SKULL - how cool is that? (Apparently, not too cool if you're an Amazon reviewer!) More info at Anchor Bay (anchorbayentertainment.com)
Transformers Cybertron: The Ultimate Collection (Cartoon Network, 2005-6) The whole thing? I hope so...otherwise, why call it "Ultimate" and charge that much for it?
China Rises: Behind the Great Wall (Discovery Channel) 2 discs
SPRING BREAK SHARK ATTACK Shark Week: Ocean of Fear (Discovery Channel)
I'M PRETTY SURE THIS WAS ON TV Garden Story (PBS?) "GardenStory is an in-depth exploration of how gardens change our lives."
TV MOVIE COLLECTIONS OF THE WEEK Jesse Stone 4-pack DVD Bundle (Stone Cold / Night Passage / Death in Paradise / Sea Change) Rescheduled from last Tuesday Maneater Series Collection - Vol. 1 Includes BloodMonkey (direct to video, Thailand, 2007) , Maneater (made for TV, 2007) and In the Spider's Web (SciFi, 2007) . Well that sounds just awful. I wouldn't be surprised if ALL of these have actually aired on SciFi recently
BRITISH TV OF THE WEEK Spaced: The Complete Series (BBC, 1999-2001) Simon Pegg, Jessica Stevenson - wildly popular over there, and over here as well - soon to be adapted into a crappy American version for FOX!
Earth - The Biography (BBC, 2008) Dr. Iain Stewart makes global science watchable (sorta) Earth: The Biography [Blu-ray]
KOREAN TV OF THE WEEK Yi San Vol. 2 (이산 - MBC, 2007-8) More info in Korean at MBC (imbc.com) (Volume 1 was out in May...looks like there'll be four, so we can guess it's about 20 episodes per volume)

Huh. That's the 2005 show. I thought they were taping these things, but you don't really think about it when it takes 3 years to come out.
Results I had:
LUCHAS 2000 (SAT) 04/16 Arena Coliseo 1) Cosmotron & Principe Magico b Chac Mool & Ricky Gonzalez 2) Comodin, Pandita, Tortuguillo Karateca I, Tortuguillo Karateca II b Epidemia, Hermano Muerte I, Hermano Muerte II, Judio Jr. 3) Chamaco Valaguez & Chamaco Valaguez Jr. DDQ Diablo Jr. & El Hijo del Diablo 4) Dark Angel b Amapola 5) Gallo Tapatio Jr., Kung Fu Jr., Matematico, Matematico Jr. b Black Terry, Fuerza Guerrera, Talisman, Talisman Jr. 6) Canek & el Hijo del Canek b Hijo del Kiss & Kiss [torneo, semifinal] 7) Dos Caras Jr. & Dos Caras Sr. b Sicodelico & Sicodlico Jr. [torneo, semifinal] 8) Canek & el Hijo del Canek b Dos Caras Jr. & Dos Caras Sr. [torneo, Final] 9) Dr. Wagner Jr., LA Park, Shocker b Damin 666, Halloween, Rey Misterio Sr.
Not all of these are listed on the DVD lineup, which could mean you miss out on Ninja Turtles. Chamacro Valaguez Jr. is Nosferatu nowadays. I don't remember La Sirentia being in the women's match, and it's better without her. Shocker working this show was weird - he'd showed up on AAA show a couple nights before, and would no show another match in this building the next day.
I think Matematico wrestled again three months later.
The Misterio Sr./Psicosis are probably from around '04-'05, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know if these sorts of releases have English subtitles? The Netflix listing for this indicates both Spanish and English, but my Spanish is just good enough for it to be distracting - and I prefer subtitles to overdubs.

The trailer for the Misterio/Psicosis one had subtitles, but the other one didn't. You've probably noticed Westlake wasn't forthcoming with that information either way.
I asked Google and was directed to the same trailers a lot of different places, and no real reviews. Maybe in a couple weeks some Amazon reviews will show up. Or you can GAMBLE!
EDIT: Nevermind, I just read your nevermind. ;-)

I'll assume I've provided some useful information in spite of my in ability to properly read a Netflix listing.

They ran a commercial on Adult Swim last night confirming there are two hours(!) worth of extras.

Here's what I've learned about owners of Blu-Ray players:
1. They will buy ANYTHING as long as it's on Blu-Ray 2. As long as it's on sale - and Amazon Day of Release prices allow them to be their cheapest
Really, it's kind of ironic because the "sale" prices still come out to about a 33-50% premium on top of the price of a "plain ol' DVD" release, but they STILL feel like they're getting a bargain. AND something new to brag about seeing in the digital clarity that only a Blu-Ray can zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
