I guess I'll be the one to start the 24 thread. Hopefully no one else starts one before I post this.

Anyway, when something gets promoted as heavily as 24 has been for the past month and a half, it's tough not to set yourself up for a major letdown. I sort of figured that it might not meet my expectations which were pretty high. But I personally thought that it was absolutely better than I could have hoped for it to be.

I saw in the opening credits that Michelle and Palmer were listed as guest stars so I figured they weren't going to be around for the duration, but I still didn't figured they'd be killed. I might be the only longtime 24 fan who didn't think that since I guess the motto with this show is to expect the unexpected. Sad to see two of the original cast gone for good, but at least Michelle was really, really hot in her last appearance.

And speaking of hot, Chloe was not half bad herself. Good to see the return of (semi) Action Chloe.

Logan is such a great dickhead heel.

What can you really say about Jack? In one of his great moments he has a hidden bag of goodies so that he's ready to fight terrorism on a moment's notice. Fantastic. Plus he worked in all the Jack Bauer cliches - "I can't explain right now, I'm gonna need you to trust me", "I need it now", etc.

Brilliant episode, and I can't wait until tomorrow night.

Oh yeah, and The only reason you aren't unconcious is because I don't want to carry you.

I haven't been able to avoid spoilers the past couple of seasons, so I knew what was gonna happen in The First 10 Minutes That Will Change Everything, but I was NOT prepared to see it happen on-screen. What a way to bring someone down from an exhilirating Steelers victory. There's gonna be a lot of questions about your relationship with Sherry, indeed. I'm fully prepared to allow this season to settle into a "normal terrorist plot" that we've grown accustomed to, but this was a hell of an opener. The Soul Patch and the Cubs Mug and Wayne Palmer make cameos!

I could just tell by the way that Palmer was pacing in front of the windows a bullet was going to come flying in. It sill shocked the hell out of me when it happened.

Do the writers have some sort of quota on crazy kids getting into trouble and mentally unstable family members they have to insert each season?

For any other flaws I might have seen, that line alone made the show for me!

Welcome back from the dead, Jack.

It was awesome seeing Wayne Palmer again. He's one of those characters who just felt too "Season Three Exclusive" (and that season, too, just seems like a skew from everything else), but by adding him to just these first two episodes and having him meet up with Jack now connects the characters and the story up better.

It took them 4 seasons, but tonight was the first time Jack and President Palmer were in the same room at the same time since Season 1. Just the circumstances were... unfortunate.

The Season Premiere (the very first hour) was what I hoped this season would be. Like "The Watchmen", with all of the people who knew Jack was alive being taken out one-by-one. The reveal with Chloe going to her car was great, and it's awesome to see the growth her character has had since Season 3 when she was just Jack's bitchy assistant who almost got fired right away.

While this show has had its awkward moments and its misses, it's still going strong at Season 5 in a concept that no one thought would make it through even 1. This show is still television crack and I'm hooked.

Apparently so. Derek is just like Kyle Singer in Season 3 and Lukas Haas in Season 4. The writers are totally in their office thinking, "Man, we need some teenage kid to get into trouble!" "We did that last season!" "Well, did it work?"

Kinda sad to see Michelle leave, but it opens the door for Chloe to become the 'eye-candy' of the season... unless she bites it as well.

What I don't like that this show does, is list almost full credits at the start of the show, giving away spoilers. SMALLVILLE didn't announce Terrance Stamp was gonna be Jor-El, they left his credit till the end credits. Why couldn't 24 do the same with their guest stars, but it's too late to nitpick about it now, I suppose.

Major snark comment has me wondering why he's been in hiding, pretending to be dead the last year and a half or so... yet he still LIVES IN L.A.? WTF? He's 30min outside of town? Did he think he'd be safe there... still in California even?

I can't wait for Tony to get out of ICU and go on a path of rage. You know it's gonna happen too.

I saw those listings and had the exact opposite thought. It was obvious to me for weeks that "first ten minutes will change everything" = "major characters are gonna die", and it was really a buzzkill to see two of my favorites go. Nitpick: Michelle wasn't original cast - she didn't come around until season two.

Logan is such a great dickhead heel.

I'd say he's more the klutzky Sean Stasiak-type myself, but to each his own.

Plus he worked in all the Jack Bauer cliches - "I can't explain right now, I'm gonna need you to trust me", "I need it now", etc.

He didn't get 'em all... but we'll hear it in about four hours or so once Jack is back in the mix at CTU.

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

My understanding is that if a character has a speaking role, they need to be credited at the opening. The few times I've seen shows not mention a surprise return in the opening credits, they've had the person appear for the cliffhanger ending without saying anything. (This is the point where you tell me Jor-El spoke and I'm proven wrong...)

My favorite 24 cliche is "that is the wrong call."

Mandy (Mia Kirshner) had an uncredited appearence last year, and she spoke. Dann Florek's surprise return to LA Law had an end credit, and he spoke. I know the usual rule is that if you speak, you get a credit, but sometimes they can do funky things with it. Still, here, what they really needed was not to take them out of the credits, but just not to list them as "guest stars".

I really hope that at some point, the bad guys' plot will all make sense, which it never did last season. I liked the episode tonight a lot, but it didn't quite have my adreniline going the way the show has at its best.

President Logan: Making Us Feel Better About Real Politicians. I mean, come on, the guy is an IDIOT. Dan Quayle on his worst day could have done a better job.

24 and Wayne had nice chemistry together.

Edit: Since when do we call him "Jack" on this board? B^)

I'm really despondent over Michelle dying it just seems so unfair to me. I have a feeling that Tony will want to join her before the season is over or join her by season's end when everything is through. It just feels wrong after Tony lifted himself from the ashes and found redemption in season 4 for this to happen to him and Michelle after they repaired their broken lives. But hey, its 24.

You can always tell yourself "Hey, Jack's come back from the dead a few times, perhaps Michelle can do the same thing?"

Then watch the episode again and see how it's not possible.

Basically:

-- Terrorists' real target wasn't the Russian helicopter but the Ontario airport where Jack was headed.
-- Derek charged after Jack like an idiot and ended up a hostage.
-- Jack found Chevensky but Chevensky managed to suicide himself via cyanide because of the distraction caused by the terror strike on the airport before Jack could get anything out of him.
-- Cummings is EVIL.

That's all you need.

Television crack...this may be the best description for this show I've ever heard.

I'm so glad 24 is back. What an awesome episode.

I was absolutely crushed about the double deaths of Palmer and Michelle. Palmer was pretty much the heart of 24, next to Jack of course, and Michelle was awesome up and down (and probably the hottest female that's ever been on there).

Huge opening-credit cast this year. I counted nine people...Jack, Audrey, Logan, Mrs. Logan, Tony, Buchanan, Curtis, Chloe, and EDGAR! They dropped Tony for the second episode, but that's still eight cast members.

I'm glad that they brought Logan back. The character is a moronic creep, but the actor really nails it. It is interesting, after seeing an uber-competent and solid Palmer at the helm for so long (and Keeler for a short while), to see this moron and cringe at his...well, just being Logan. What happened to Keeler, anyway? I know his plane went down...I guess it is assumed that he's dead or still incapacitated.

Jack's line was awesome...but Buchanan nails a close second. I don't remember it exactly, but Audrey was saying something about President Logan handling it, and Bill was like, "That's what I'm afraid of." Totally inappropriate for him to say as CTU Director, but, hell, he's being honest. It wasn't stated as to why he is the director now, seeing as how he came over from Division last year, but I'm assuming that his disobedience with Logan last year (the Prado torturing) came back to bite him in the ass.

I'm glad Audrey is back, too. She was pretty whiny last year, but without two men to divide her emotions between, she'll probably be more bearable. She was certainly cool under pressure when telling Logan about Jack, and Kim Raver is quite beautiful (even though she could use a cheeseburger).

Poor Edgar. He looked absolutely crushed when the new guy told him he nailed Chloe. I'm jealous. Not of Edgar...of the new guy...really.

Good scene alert: Mike's reaction to the Palmer news. They'd been through a lot, and it ended badly, but his quiet reaction of grief served as a reminder to their history.

Jean Smart is still servicably attractive, even if she is crazier that a shithouse loon. I didn't know whether to laugh or be scared when she sunk her face into that sink.

One minor gripe...why have Cummings be a bad guy? He seemed uber-loyal to Logan last season, even convincing Mike Novick that he was up for the job when it was fairly obvious that he wasn't. I guess if you're going to have a nefarious plot, it helps if your boss is a complete idiot.

Did anyone else's FOX station have audio problems? About 10 minutes from the end of hour 2 the sound started going in and out for the rest of the show. It wasnt my TV and it wasnt the local station because the commercials were fine.

Is it wrong that after the first lady's quasi-blackmail attempt to get into the hard copy document room, I wanted to make Jean Smart "scream the loudest [I've] ever heard a woman scream in [my] life"?

Errrr... anyways.

President Logan's petulant "I don't care, just FIX IT!" and complete inability to make choices but rather rely on others has emerged as a theme early in the season. Not exactly the best decision-making skills there, Mr. President.

Sean Astin's character hooked me (as I'm sure it hooked everyone) into believing him to be a meddlesome beaucrat in the Chappelle/Driscoll mode until it turned out his methodology saved the day, in stark contrast to the usual instinct-heavy solutions utilized on 24 (another emergent theme this season). Well played, writers of 24, well played.

I can already barely wait for next week.

About halfway through Hour 2 or so, they cut to a commercial abruptly without showing the ticking clock. They then went back to the show, and cut back and forth to commercial snippets for about a minute...I think it was the fruit store commercial with the Capital One guy. So, yeah, there were some problems...it doesn't sound like we saw the same ones, but something was up.

Liked tonight's show a lot. Not as much as last night, but you certainly can't expect to have an episode that good every week.

I agree with Alpha Dog about Astin's character. I enjoyed the typical meddlesome outsider aspect that they've used in the past, but it's much more effective if they don't make him a bumbling ass so that you (the viewer) has to give him at least some respect.

Logan continues to play the guy you love to hate to perfection. Last year he was actively loathesome with his self serving decision to throw 24 under the bus, but now he's on "our side" but just too completely incompetent to like.

I'm liking Buchanan in the role as head of CTU. He's no George Mason, but then, who is? He has a mix of competence in his job, trust in Jack, and ability to command respect as the leader.

This won't happen, but I'm hoping they keep the Diane/Derrick drama to a minimum for the rest of the season. At the very least, I hope they don't get kidnapped or something like that. Considering the way that 24 and Derrick were so standoffish in the beginning, I didn't really by that big hug after they were rescued (or for that matter Derrick running into the airport to warn 24 about some supposedly shady looking guys).

Martha Logan > Sherry Palmer. Also, Curtis Manning smokes Chase Edmonds in every possible way, but I hope everyone figured that out during Day 4.

I've had audio problems both nights. Lots of loud crackling and dropouts (most notably when the SFX were loud).

I chalked it up to my DVR being wonky. Anyone else have similar symptoms?

Oh, and another awesome ep.
