Roush Fenway Racing announced today that Matt Kenseth will not be returning next year. Kenseth is in a contract year and speculation has been he's headed to Joe Gibbs Racing, and it seems Jack Roush pushed Matt before he could jump, announcing 2011 (and possibly 2012) Nationwide Series Champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. would drive the 17 car in 2013.

This *seems* like there are good reason for all of these moves. Announcing Stenhouse was moving to Cup gives Roush a chance to use Ricky to get the 17 sponsored. (And likewise, surely Trevor Bayne will end up in the 6 full-time in Nationwide next year, and they can try to get that car sponsored, too.) And apparently (according to Twitter rumblings) ever since Roush Fenway went all-in with Carl Edwards to get him to stay, Kenseth and Greg Biffle haven't been super-thrilled with things behind the scenes even though they are 1-2 in the points standings right now.

Tons of dominoes are going to start to fall for 2013 now.

Does this mean 4 cars for Joe Gibbs next year or is Joey Logano going to be the odd man out when the wheels stop spinning ?

It *sounds* like four cars. JGR keeps saying they want to keep Joey, and if they let him go they could basically be pulling a reverse-Roush move, replacing a young dude with an older guy. I really don't know if I were Home Depot if I would want to jump to Matt or not, so it will be interesting to see how that all shakes out. I think you could make a case that Home Depot would "fit" Matt better, but with Joey coming up and improving he'd seem the better long-term wagon to hitch to.

This is really surprising. I could see Logano getting booted for Kenseth more than I can see JGR going to 4 cars because as this case shows, finding sponsors is really tough. Joey was put in a tough spot, having to come to Cup years before he was ready after Stewart bounced to form SHR. It worked out well for Stewart, not so much for JGR and Logano.

As for where Kenseth could end up...I'd bet JGR with SHR a close second. SHR has room with Newman possibly leaving due to lack of sponsorship and You get the added bonus of having not one, but two Cup champs, help Danica with what will be a very tough transition to that series.

Gibbs racing already said they were working on a contract extension for Logano at Michigan so unless they do a 180° when adding Kenseth, I can't see them letting him go now. They'll probably add a 4th car; it's the question of how do they get sponsors for all 4 cars. Otherwise, I could actually see him go to RCR (Childress Racing), replacing Jeff Burton and maybe mentoring Austin Dillon when he joins the Sprint Cup full time.

This is a bit shocking but not really. I felt that if any one relationship was going to last in NASCAR outside of the Hendrick cars (Gordon, Johnson), it would have been Kenseth and Rousch. But you knew the money problems were there, even before he won the Daytona 500. That lack of sponsorship must have really killed the relationship. BTW, what is Rousch's problem with sponsorships? I know everyone has had some difficulty getting the money they've needed but his organization in particular always seems to have a problem with it. Burton, Martin, McMurray, Ragan- they always have drivers that have to leave in part because they can't afford to fund the cars. It makes me wonder if Jack Rousch really knows how to properly operate a team financially; we know they can operate championship contending cars but if I'm Ford, I'm not crazy about my flagship organization having such difficulty getting funding and having such a revolving door for brand name drivers because of it.

Burton won't get canned at RCR, he has a contract through 2014. And since Paul Menard's dad sponsors the 27, he's not going anywhere either. Once Burton is done after 2014, Austin Dillon is taking that ride.

Apparently Rousch has issues with sponsors because he's not willing to negotiate costs.

I'm sure Gamestop/Dollar General could pony up the bucks to sponsor Logano in a 4th Gibbs car if they wanted to, but I don't see it happening.

I can see Austin in the 33 next year and then Ty Dillon in the 31 starting in 2014.

This kind of reasoning blows my mind. I realize there is a point where you have to draw the line, but when you are talking about the kind of money that the Roushes (net worth est. $200 million, not to mention the partners he has through Roush Fenway-conglomerate) and Roger Penske (net worth est. $2 billion, with a "b"), the idea that they can't field Nationwide teams for the Justin Allgaiers and Trevor Baynes of the world because of their bottom line is a little insulting to me.

With the success Clint Bowyer is having at Waltrip, maybe Kenseth could be an asset there. Give him and Mark Martin full time rides and there ya go: three well seasoned, experienced, championship caliber drivers who could give MWR a great run.

Mark Martin isn't coming back full-time, and MWR says they are trying to keep Truex (also a free agent, and a guy whose price probably dropped a little in the last week) and NAPA (who I can't see leaving Mikey).

Mikey did say they wouldn't mind fielding a fourth car for Brian Vickers next year if they could get a sponsor. Pretty good for the Sheriff, considering he was the second choice to be running the races in the 55. (It was supposed to be Elliott Sadler before he and Childress decided to decline that role.)

You know who is really hurt by this? Kurt Busch. Yes, he deserves it, but I feel despite his anger issues he'd still get a relatively decent ride next year because of his talent level.

I keep hearing Newman might be looking for a new ride from some Newman fan I work with. Is he just blowing *smoke*?

Newman keeping his ride is dependent on sponsorship. Stewart wants to keep him but with the Army being both a part time sponsor and working only on yearly contracts (since I believe its budget has to be approved by Congress) it's tough to know what sponsorship you can count on from them each year. Since Newman has at least 4-5 other sponsors to run the full year, I'd assume getting a deal done for him may be tough in 2013. Stewart is set, as is Danica, the 39 is the tough one to get sponsored.

That blowing smoke line has me on the line of laughing my ass off and wanting to throw up my dinner from the imagery.

Speculation was that had Roush not had a Cup ride for Stenhouse he might go drive for his old dirt car owner...Stewart. Now that that is not an option I would have a hard time imaging there will be too much driver movement. According to jayski these are the known 2013 free agent Cup drivers.

A.J. Allmendinger [one year deal in the #22]
Aric Almirola [one year deal in the #43]
Kurt Busch [one year deal in the #51]
Matt Kenseth [leaving Roush after 2012 season going to ? JGR? Penske?]
Joey Logano [contract ends after 2012 season]
Jamie McMurray [contract ends after 2012 season]
Ryan Newman [contract ends after 2012 season]
David Ragan [contract ends after 2012 season]
David Reutimann [one year deal with TBR]
Regan Smith [contract ends after 2012 season]
Martin Truex Jr. [contract ends after 2012 season]
Brian Vickers [part time in the #55, eight races]

Based on recent performance I would rate these open seats in this order. (Assuming that no top-level teams expand their car count for next year besides Stewart Haas going to three cars for Danica.)

1. The 17 (filled by Stenhouse)
2. The 20 (which seems to be either Logano with Kensth in a 4th car or Matt taking Joey's spot)
3. The 22 (where Newman already drove before going to drive for Smoke)
4. The 56
5. The 39 (even with Hendrick stuff they are still "only" a two-car team and very hit-or-miss)
6. The 1
7. The 43
8. The 78 (where he seems happy but they were better last year)
9. Brand new Dodge team (Andretti? Robby Gordon?)
10. The 51
11. The 34(sorry, CRZ)
12. The 10

Everyone from 2-5 has at least publicly said they are planning to re-up their driver. Would Ganassi replace McMurray with Kurt Busch or Regan Smith? Maybe, I guess, although Chip and Jamie have history.

I only talk about BACK MARKERS!

Why would I be sorry about the #34 appearing on your list? I have no loyalty to Ragan, all T-shirts and cans of boiled peanuts aside. I would speculate that Ragan will stick around but only because he'll have nothing better. I'd love to have him leave and let Josh Wise run full time in the 34. Gilly stays in the #38, of course.

I'd love to see Front Row go to three full-time rides but they will need a real sponsor for that and not these nickel-and-dime deals to go with their owner's fast food franchises.

I'd also like to see BK Racing go to three full-time rides - keep Cassill and Kvapil and put ??? in the #73. (This won't happen.)

Maybe bring Yeley back into the fold - I would be shocked, shocked if the #49 were back next year.

Are you expecting anyone but Danica in the #10? I can't believe you even have it on your list. Or do you mean whatever the second TBR car evolves into? (I'm guessing the #35 returns?)

Who else have we got...

Nemechek probably returns in the #87 (but not the #97)
The #32 probably returns
The #95 probably returns and part-times it, but changes drivers AGAIN
The #30 probably doesn't return - nah, I've changed my mind, they probably return and they probably stick with Stremme
The #79 probably doesn't return...or do I mean the 74?
The #98 either returns and repeats as king of the S&Ps, or morphs into some other Humphrey team configuration, renumbers and repeats as king of the S&Ps
Robby Gordon runs one race just to make sure Danica never gets #7 (and I laugh)

Yeah, what IS Dodge gonna do? They're down to nobody.

Thing is, I think Martin would be full time if Michael Waltrip didn't tackle a few races here and there during the year. It's unfortunate that Martin couldn't get a true fulltime seat for the year...but at least the Aarons commercials with Waltrip are pretty funny.

A great four car team would be Martin, Truex, Bowyer, and Kenseth with Michael Waltrip officially retiring.

Yes, I purely meant the TBR side of the 10, which will surely go back to the 35 or whatever, NOT the 10 Danica will be driving next year. (And if SHR was smart, IMO they would try to do another partial deal with Danica and someone else splitting time in Cup while she does another full Nationwide season. Too bad the GoDaddy $$$ is driving the decision, although it isn't inconceivable that she will improve dramatically when she is all Cup all the time.)

Mark Martin isn't skipping the restictor-plate races because Mikey is taking them from him...he's skipping those races (and a few others) because he DOESN'T WANT to run them, or a full-time schedule any more.

Why are the '76 Raiders on that list? As a lifelong Raiders fan who thought Ken Stabler, Fred Biletnikoff, Ted Hendricks, and the gang were all super heroes I can't personally fathom the hate. John Madden was a likeable coach.
