As long-time The-W members know, every year since 1996, I go to anywhere from 20 to 40 of the weirdest, mind-melting films at the Fantasia Film Festival.

Here is this year's Fantasia Film Festival web-site:
http://fantasiafestival.com/2012/en

The big difference this year is that I have a press pass. (!) Partly because I did the organizers a few favours this year and partly because I wrote 16 reviews of Fantasia films last year:
http://www.soundonsight.org/author/michael-ryan/page/4/

This year, I will probably be writing even more for www.SoundOnSight.org
My goal is 6 reviews/articles a week for the duration of the festival.

My first article, a report on the festival press conference, is here:
http://www.soundonsight.org/the-three-best-announcements-from-the-fantasia-press-conference/

The most interesting thing out of that article is a film that I am really looking forward to called The Human Race, directed by Paul Hough who did The Backyard, a really good documentary about backyard wrestling back in 2002.

The idea behind the film is that 80 "contestants" are entered in a foot race. If they step on the grass, they die. If they don't race, they die. If they get lapped, they die. Only one can win, the rest will all... you guessed it... die.

The star of the film is one-legged "character actor" Eddie McGee, the winner of the initial Big Brother in 2000.

Needless to say, getting funding for the project was not easy and to complete the film for Fantasia they had to do a Kick Starter to raise $6,200.

*****

For the 4th year running, now would be the time when I (with great trepidation) issue my annual Cerebus challenge where I allow him to pick a film for me.

Previous Cerebus challenges:

http://llakor.blogspot.ca/2009/07/embodiment-of-evil-2008-aka-encarnacao.html

*****

If there are any films that anyone else would like me to go see and report back on, feel free to chime in. Tuesday is my day off from watching films (and my GURPS night) and I usually won't see films during the week before 7PM, but otherwise I am open to suggestions.

*****

In terms of the reviews from sound on sight, I guess I will do a post once a week summarizing what I saw with links?

This years challenge might surprise you. The films I have picked for you to choose from are almost all bloodless... well less blood than what I normally would pick.

First, I'm gonna cheat here by not picking films I know you're gonna see anyway. One guy I know said Ace Attorney was the best Miike film he'd ever seen. This would be my first choice but I think you have already picked it. Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend was awesome and you should have seen it three years ago when it came out. Space Battleship Yamoto is another one that was really good, but I think you'd have already seen it or are already planning to see it without me telling you to.

Now for my picks...

Possession - Okay, here we go with the fucked up movies I like. This film is fucking amazing, yet also totally insane. Sam Neill and Isabelle give oscar worthy performances in this total mind fuck of a film. Seriously, I've seen it like 20 times and I'm still not sure what the fuck is happening for half the movie, but it's beautiful and engrossing. This is my top choice!

Singham - This movie is Bad Ass! Yes, it's a Bollywood film so it's got the musical numbers thrown in, but the music is catchy as hell. The action scenes are totally nuts, insane as well. A fun time will be had by you, if you go see this.

We Are Legion: The Story of The Hacktivists - This sounds pretty good, but I think Rules #1 and #2 might apply.

The Tall Man - I was not a fan of Martyrs and yes, I'm sure that is a surprise. This film sounds just as interesting as Martyrs, however, so I'm willing to let YOU take a chance and see it for me. Lol!

Toy Masters - If you're really hard up for something to go see on August 6th, around 5:35pm. then this might be a film for you. It sounds totally geeky and only for hardcore fans of He-Man, so don't feel bad by saying no to this. If I were in Canada, however, I'd be first in line for this shit.

Chained - Vincent D'Onofrio as a serial killer and the director of Boxing Helena... you can't go wrong here!

A Night of Nightmares - A film I never heard of until now. It sounds interesting.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

Ace Attorney - on my list

Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend - NOT on my list. Did get plugged during the press conference by the representative from Concordia University. Would fit on my schedule.

Space Battleship Yamato - on my list

*****

Possession - NOT on my list. Can't do it, I'm seeing Funeral Kings.

Singham - Was in my maybe pile. Fits in my schedule.

We Are Legion: The Story of The Hacktivists - NOT on my list. Can't do it, I'm seeing The Victim with Michael F***ing Biehn

The Tall Man - NOT on my list. Can't do it, I'm seeing For Love's Sake

Toy Masters - NOT on my list. Fits in my schedule.

Chained - on my list. Largely because I am going to see the documentary Despite the Gods about how f***ed up the filming of Hisss was and Jennifer Lynch will be at both screenings. Also D'Onofrio is one of my favourite actors.

A Night of Nightmares - NOT on my list, but I am glad you mentioned it, because I loved Marc Senter in Brawler (A much better movie than Warrior.) Fits my schedule.

So you're "making" me go see Ultraman, Singham, Toy Masters, Chained and A Night of Nightmares.

I might be able to see The Tall Man and We Are Legion as a press screening.

Llakor's probably been too busy to do this, so I thought I'd link his reviews here for him. Good reads, the lot of them.

Excision (soundonsight.org)
Toy Masters (soundonsight.org), which I picked. Evidently not a good one.
Chained (soundonsight.org), which I also picked. It WAS a good one.
The Kick (soundonsight.org)
Black's Game (soundonsight.org), I wanna see this.
Smuggler (soundonsight.org)
Dragon (soundonsight.org)
The Victim (soundonsight.org) - Staring Michael Fucking Biehn. Written by Michael Fucking Biehn. Directed by Michael Fucking Biehn.
Resolution (soundonsight.org)
The Human Race (soundonsight.org)
Sushi Girl (soundonsight.org)
For Love's Sake (soundonsight.org)

If I missed any, I couldn't find them. I was looking for his review of Ace Attorney and Mega Monster Battle, but they were not to be found.

Thanks, been meaning to do that.

I am writing up the last of my Fantasia reviews this weekend, so they should be up on Monday - ish.

A server transfer ate my UltraMan review. Ace Attorney, I have been grappling with explaining why hair (style) is so important to that film.
