With 3 left to play, here are the current playoff standings & seedings:

NL

1 – Los Angeles Dodgers (93-66)
2 – Philadelphia Phillies (92-67)
3 – St. Louis Cardinals (91-68)
4 – Colorado Rockies (91-68)

LAD hosts COL for 3 this weekend. All four have clinched playoff spots, it’s just a matter of match-ups and home-field. And the *Rockies* can end up as the top seed. All tiebreakers for best record are decided by head-to-head %. Either possible three-way tie is won by the Phils.

As a Phillies fan, I have hard time favoring them in any short series, whether it’s against the Rockies or the Dodgers. Plus there’s the first round sweep by the Rockies in 2007 that still haunts me. But, I am ever so slightly cautiously optimistic. I’m dying to see who Charlie Manuel starts in Game 1 – Hamels or Lee.

AL

1 – New York Yankees (102-57)
2 – Los Angeles Angels (94-65)
3 – Detroit Tigers (85-74)
4 – Boston Red Sox (92-67)

These seedings are fixed, but the Twins are 2 back of the Tigers with 3 to play. The Tigers host the White Sox this weekend, while the Twins host the Royals – including Greinke. The only possible one-game playoff tiebreaker in either league would be the Twins hosting the Tigers. BUT, the *Vikings* are playing at home on Monday night, so the Tigers-Twins game would be on *Tuesday*.

The only LDS matchup set in stone as of right now, then, is BOS @ LAA. The Angels can’t catch a break.

You're telling me. Guys like Bill Simmons who are saying that the Angels are finally due obviously haven't seen that Angels bullpen. Not to mention the fact that having the best offense in the league has meant jack in the last three years when Lester and Beckett consistently pitch shutouts in October. I will now continue to bang my head against the table.

Speaking of banging one's head against a table, OF COURSE The Dodgers have to play what amounts to a 3-game playoff (or, more accurately, a 1-game playoff, three times in a row) for the Western Division, despite being alone in first for 90% of the season. Why am I even close to shocked by this?

Oh well. I'll be there tonight. There are fireworks scheduled. Let's hope they don't go to waste.

If we didn't face Boston, then making it further into the post-season would always be because we didn't face Boston. It's the Red-Soxed Monkey on our backs that we have to deal with.

Jepsen has done well setting up Fuentes. Oliver is pitching well, and Palmer has been showing some solid outings. This stuff about the bullpen is really talked about WAY too much given how the season ended.

My money is on Yanks vs. Cards with the Cards winning if their pitching holds up.

Can't get a read on the Red Sox. They seem like they peaked in mid September, but if Lester and Beckett are right and Dice-K is serviceable, then they have a chance.

Even though my team did not make it I find the NL pretty intriguing. The teams are all pretty even and any match up is interesting to me. I'm hoping for STL vs. COL at some point though to see Holliday vs. Rockies. Also pretty cool that the last three NL champions are all in it. Maybe that means the Dodgers win this year?

The AL is far less interesting unless you are a Yankees or Red Sox fan, or maybe even just a Yankees fan. I'll say Cards/Yanks does seem like the most likely result but when was the last time the most likely result happened? 1999?

Well, the Eagles are an exception. Every year, no matter who comes, who goes and who stays on the team, Eagles fans eagerly predict a 14-2 season and a Super Bowl victory. You can set your watch by it.
