Sure, I'll start the thread.

I only saw the Rumble Match itself, and it was full of surprises. Taker and HBK coming in #1 and #2 was a lot of fun, and how about that #30 guy? I didn't even think Cena was close to being ready for a return, but seeing him come out after Helmsley (#29) destroyed the entire roster was a bit of a shock. Plus he even got to toss the all mighty one for the win. So, I guess we are going down the road to WrestleMania with Cena/Orton rekindling their feud. A few side obersevations ...

- I don't know if there has ever been a Rumble with this much beef in it. There really are a lot of big guys in the WWE right now.

- Foley served less of a purpose than Snuka and Piper.

- Taker had his working boots on tonight as he was the feature of a lot of the match up until his elimination, which was well done as well as Michaels right after.

- I didn't understand the whole Hornswaggle portion.

All in all it was one of the better Rumbles, I'm just not a big fan of the final three (HHH, Cena & Batista) so the end was a bit of a let down as well as HHH getting to be the one who killed everyone this year. The rest was well done. As far as Rumbles go I'd give it a B

And he got tossed by Triple H! Nearly ten years later, Triple H STILL owns Foley!

I'm still not convinced they won't pull the trigger on a Jeff Hardy mini-reign. I'm thinking he might get the win on Raw. But if I'm wrong, then Cena's return and Triple H's title crusade essentially pushes Jeff back down the card, which is a huge shame.

Finlay was DQ'd from the Rumble? Since when are there DQ's in the Rumble?

EDIT: Oh, and if CRZ was still doing recaps, Jeff Hardy would forever be called "Jeff Harvey". Welcome to WWE, Mike Adamle!

A bleh show, but not too bad.

-Flair/MVP was nothing special

-Jericho proved that blood is quite vivid in HD.

-Rey/Edge was good, but if the crowd was behind Rey it would have seemed better.

-I expected Orton to go over, but such a sudden death for Jeff Harvey killed it for me and the crowd. Nothing wrong with having a heel win clean, but it just seemed too deflating.

-The Rumble just dragged. Distributing the top-level throughout the night was smart, but as said there was way too much meat in that ring most of the match, and I agree that the Hornswaggle thing went nowhere. I was thinking they were stockpiling bodies for a late Big Show entrance, but Cena was a shock. Not necessarily a good one.

-Shawn motioning for Taker to throw Santino out of the ring was high-larious.

Hey, they got me. I was completely convinced Hunter was going over, especially given the hideous outcome of Orton/Hardy and I was none-too-pleased about it. I had not even heard an inkling of Cena being ready to return, they did a fantastic job of hiding that.

Jericho/JBL was sad, and almost pathetic, to be honest. He really should never have come back. This angle does not have the juice to go to Mania but it appears as if they are going to force that on us anyhow.

Edge and Rey-Rey was okay, but I had no clue why Vickie was in a wheelchair. Crowd turning on Rey was predictable. NY is the smarkiest crowd on earth, and yet the term bizarro world was never used. Funny, that.

As for Orton and Hardy, they really raped Jeff. I mean, that was just terrible, they could not have buried him more. If you woulda told me in 2002, when Jeff was flubbing spot after spot, that I would ever become a fan of his I'd have thought you were Scientologist-crazy, but here we are. They ruined him, and for no reason. Easily could have done a switch here and back to Orton sometime before Mania. Wouldn't have hurt Randy at all.

But yeah, I dug the Cena comeback.

Even with the weirdness of some of the booking, there can be hardly any argument that the non-Rumble matches were way better than last year's effort. The Rumble itself was better last year, leaving this year's show as on par with 2007.

Still, I thought it was a thumbs up show.

I thought it was a good show. Had a definite big time feel to it. Crowd was hot all night which helped.

I liked the new ringside guy, even with the Jeff Harvey flub.

Loved the huge "YOU CAN'T WRESTLE," chant for Kahli.

Y2J missed the bulldog badly, but the match wasn't bad otherwise. It wasn't built to be some wrestling classic, Jericho said it would be a fight on Raw. He didn't want to beat JBL in a wrestling match, he just wanted to kick the crap out of him.

The Rumble was good. The Madison Square Garden set is great for Rumble entrances. Cena was a great surprise. It can't be a bad thing to have the crowd as into the final three as they were.

Definite thumbs up.

Did Jeff fall off the wagon again? That's the only reason I can think that the match ended that way. Very sad way to blow off what has been a money feud.

Cena's back. More yay/boo matches. Great. Cena/HHH or Cena/Orton has been done to death. It makes me not want to watch Wrestlemania. Cena/Batista would have been a better route to go.

Santino's muscle pose was the highlight of the night.

I just got back from the Garden (thanks Cablevision Exec Suite) and here are my on-site observations:

The crowd was completely ready to make Hardy a star and they blew their chance. I have no idea where they go with him from here.

Crowd was only about 25% Rey and Edge ate it up. The final sequence was the second biggest pop of the night.

JBL blew 2 big spots (including the bulldog) and Jericho had to improvise to save face. JBL seemed to be about 2 seconds behind the whole match.

Say what you will about HHH, but the crowd popped huge for him and he keeps laying down month after month.

Although NYC always craps on him, Cena gets the biggest REACTION every time I'm at the Garden. That's why he keeps winning...he invokes the most emotion from the fans. From his entrance forward the crowd was on it's feet.

That was awesome!!!

Jeff getting beat so decisively was deflating. Rey got protected far more in losing than Jeff did, which is just weird.

Foley has probably never been treated more like garbage. WTF.

It's been weird buying a PPV after not watching any wrestling for the last three months, but there was no way I was going to miss the Rumble. (Ten years, and counting...)

I have been keeping up with news, however, so Cena was a huge surprise. Seeing that JBL is back in the ring was a very different sort of surprise.

Anyway, here are the stats as I compiled them: Rumble Stats 2002-2008 (Excel) (ititches.com)

There's something that irks me about Cena returning SO FAR ahead of schedule...it just feels like a indirect, unstated plug for "Look at the miracle effects of HGH!"...which is certainly NOT the message, implied or otherwise, that the E should be sending nowadays (or ever). That was my thought as the show ended.

The Rumble itself was fun as always, but there was a lot of humanity in the ring at once...my favorite moment: C.M. Punk was cracking up laughing on the mat at Piper/Snuka, motions to Morrison as if to say "this is great"...and Morrison promptly kicks him in the head and they go back to fighting. The Hornswoggle/Finlay stuff was confusing...after all that time spent on them, Finlay was never officially IN the Rumble? And Hornswoggle didn't do much of anything? Also, good to know Elijah Burke still exists.

My friends got it in HD...yeah, Jericho's blood was quite crimson.

Pretty good pay-per-view, but all the potential was there for a great one. It just seemed like this one never kicked into top gear until Cena made his shocker of an entrance. Ok, seriously, a three-month recovery from a torn pec? Unless he just decided to risk it for a five-minute cameo and this will be the last time we actually see Cena wrestle until Wrestlemania, which'll give him two more months of recovery.

Rumble itself was alright. I prefer it when the big names enter at semi-random times, which makes it more realistic given the match's blind draw gimmick. UT/Michaels at #1 and #2 and HHH/Cena at #29 and #30 seemed a bit much. There was no rhyme or reason to the clock this year --- some guys entered after what seemed like 30 seconds after the last man.

I guess the story point for Finlay/Hornswoggle is that Hornswoggle knows he can really trust ol' Fit, since he gave up his spot in the Rumble to save the little guy. Since guys have both a) come into the Rumble early before and b) brought weapons, I'd suggest that Vince is the one behind Finlay's purposeful elimination.

Up to the rumble the match's didn't live up to anything for me. I realy thought Hunter was going to win till Cena showed up. But it left me with some questions

how can a tair heal in 3 mounths?

How can you get DQ'ed from a math that the only way to lose is to be tossed over the top rope?

why was Hornswagle even in this match?

but you can tell how little vince cares about some of these guys mainly Folly, Miz, Jeff, Rey, Dreamer, Punk,
and biggest jobber on the roster Kane.

Were any spots handed out ahead of time? I haven't kept up on Raw and Smackdown but I thought not knowing any of the spots ahead of time was much better. Especially since they usually give out 1, 2 and 30 and those are actually spots that should be the biggest surprise.

Also, I'm going to assume The Sham's stats are correct and that nobody lasted more than 40 minutes. I'm not crazy about Batista being in their 30+ minutes but I'm glad nobody went over 40 minutes and nobody did the beginning to end thing, they need to retire that for a while.

There were still some problems as others have pointed out, but those were improvements I thought. They probably should've ditched Hornswoggle, the legends and some of the beef and at least let some of the tag teams show up for something. Kendrick should be there just because somebody could toss him really far. Edge's cronies could've been trying to get the spot so Edge doesn't have to defend or something. Is Haas still doing the mask gimmick? They probably could've worked that in somehow. Would've been nice to see Murdoch too.

I don't like the idea of Triple H/Cena or Orton/Cena or Orton/Triple H but if they still go with Edge/UT I'm sure I'll order WM.

Missed the first two matches due to the satellite feed not working at the bar I was at, came in just as Ashley was trying to get in to talk to Maria. Overall, from what I saw, it was a strong card. Orton going over so clean and so quick was astonishing, but the whole danger of the RKO is that it can come out of anywhere, so it's not unimaginable.

Rey vs Edge was pretty decent. Not liking the Vickie involvement, but it's still a decent fued, and the spear on the diving Rey was a nice spot.

As for the Rumble, everybody where I was at popped when Snuka came out, but once he was in the ring, it was obvious he is too far past his prime to be in any kind of PPV match, the guy next to me said "who's next, Piper?" 3,2,1,0 and cue the bagpipes. Nice for them to get some air time, but good lord they were both so out of shape I felt bad for them.

When HHH came out 29th, everybody at our table was buzzing about who'd be 30. I called for Hogan (wearing an American Gladiator's T-shirt) the guy next to me called Cena, to which everybody laughed. Then he came out and I looked around at all the dropped jaws. Nobody could believe he'd be there. It was obvious he was getting the win, but the "YAY, BOO, YAY, BOO" punch trading with HHH makes it clear that they need to turn him heel, but not the big cheating heel, rather the kind that just runs down the fans in promos and somehow sneaks wins out of the blue.

Overall, I was entertained.
(Saw Brutus Beefcake at the bar, he was actually in terrific shape and looked very healthy. He pretty much refused to watch any of the PPV though. Real nice guy)

I thought that the RR was pretty good.
Flair vs. MVP was O.K. MVP does try very hard to be unlikeable. I was surprised that there wasn't any testicle based offense out of the Nature Boy.
JBL vs. Jericho was passable. Horrid blown spots and it never quite clicked. But Jericho going crazy at the end almost made up for it.
Rey vs. Edge was really good. The crowd preferring Edge was funny.
Orton vs. Hardy. The match was OK. Hardy and Orton worked together fairly well. Orton changing up his chinlock to body scissors helped out. The ending was stupid though. Why have Hardy lose so cleanly?
Oh wait here is why. The Rumble was good. Too much wrestlers in there at any given time. The jobbers like Snitsky and Rhodes should have been tossed sooner. UT and HBK as 1 and 2 helped make the match seem more important though. They did partly avoid the often pointless middle where a whole bunch of low level wrestlers come out in a row. Cena coming out was a huge surprise. And that is why Jeff Harvey was jobbed down to #3 or 4 face. Cena is back.

Hell, I'll take a Cena return any day of the week and twice on Sunday over what looked, up until that point, like an inevitable HHH coronation.

And yeah, the Rumble ring got a little over-full, but at least they kept the action moving. It looked to me like there was a lot less of that "you lie on the ropes and I'll pretend I'm trying to push you out" spot being used.

I was shocked that MVP tapped to the F4 so fast, but I guess there was only so much they could do in the alloted time. For the same reason, I don't really have that much of a problem with Hard(ve)y losing to a flash RKO -- as StaggerLee says, it's not the first time Randy's won a match that way. The crowd I was with loved it, anyway ... for some reason, my bar of choice attracts a lot of pro-Orton fans.

Somebody needs to tell Piper to never take his shirt off in public again.
