If East Carolina isn't in the Top 15 next week, something is seriously flawed with the polls. If they run the table in Conference USA, they do have 2 impressive wins that can be used in arguments.
At least the Irish didn't lose to San Diego State. At the very least, Skip can be the heir if they don't show marked improvement.
Whoever thought 10 years ago that these words could be used: Steve Spurrier is Vandy's bitch.
Ty Willingham can't buy a break.

I saw more celebrations on first downs in that game than I saw on the TD. What a joke.

I think by the end of the season those two wins won't really look all that impressive. We knew Virginia Tech was gonna suck going into this year. They may struggle to make a bowl game. West Virginia has a crappy coach now, and boy does it show. But yes, ECU looked good anyway.

It's fun watching Florida struggle with a cruddy Miami team. Really fun.

Spurrier should have checked his ego and realized building at South Carolina was not going to be worthwhile. I hate to say it, but when Tommy loses his job at Clemson this year Spurrier would turn them into a power within two years.

If I was a Miami fan, I wouldn't be happy right now. Not only do you blow the cover in the last minute on a punt return leading to a chip shot field goal, but then you take a knee down 23 points to end the game? Who the hell takes a knee when they are losing?
On the impressiveness of the East Carolina wins: They are a non-BCS team that beat teams that were ranked in the Top 20 when they played them and the Top 10 when they played them. That is more than Boise or Hawaii had on the resume. And, despite the crappy coach who got the West Virginia job because the administration was blinded by one game/hatred of Rodriguez, they might still go 9-3 because the rest of the Big East outside of South Florida outright sucks. And Va. Tech might go 8-4 just due to the vast mediocrity of the ACC.

Did anyone else catch Vince McMahon's "intro" for the WVa/ECU game on ESPN2? He proclaimed that he was *still* the richest and best looking graduate of ECU and that they would lay the SmackDown on the Mountaineers.

That South Fla/Central Fla game was pretty entertaining. I really thought there was going to be a knock-down drag-out fight at various points during the game and apparently, this is the last time they will play each other for the forseeable future (at least that's how the announcers made it sound to me at the end of the game).

It is a good rule in life never to apologize. The right sort of people do not want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.

I don't get the controversy in the Washington game.
A) There is a rule that says the player is to give the ball to referee. Technically they can call a foul for throwing the ball in the air. It might be a dumb rule, it might be a rule that isn't often called, but it's a rule.
B) How did that call have any effect on the result? Washington completely botched the extra point. That wouldn't have changed fifteen yards closer.

I don't know why anybody would be happy to see Florida "struggle". As a Florida fan I was perfectly fine with the game. It's a rivalry game, of course it's going to be close. Ultimately we pulled away and won a game that we were supposed to win by 21 by 23 points. I don't see how that is considered "struggling". Close games aren't struggling, they're just close games.

Actually this "rivalry" has a history of games that weren't very close. Miami had a losing season last year, has a horrible offense and a freshman QB in his first start. It should have been an ass kicking from the start, but the Gators looked just plain terrible for much of the game. Pulling away at the end doesn't mean much to me.

I don't know how to feel about the BYU/Washington thing. It should not have been a penalty just because that was gay. But it's a rule and all you had to do was make a relatively short FG. Some sportscasters are going too far with the bitching on this, like they were robbed.

Virginia Tech had all it could handle with Furman.

Furman.

If I had to guess I'd say they will almost certainly lose to Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Boston College, FSU, and Miami with toss ups against North Carolina and Virginia. They look that bad. So 6 losses minimum. We'll see.

But yes West Virginia likely will have an ok record because the Big East is looking really, really terrible this year. People want to keep up the myth that South Florida is worth talking about but they still aren't.

As part of its exit agreement when it left Conference USA for the Big East, USF had to play five nonconference games with C-USA opponents. They scheduled a four-year series with UCF, and beat them four straight times - most notably 64-12 in Tampa last year. UCF is desperate for the series to continue - as you would expect any non-BCS team to love the prospect of a home-and-home series with a BCS team - but USF has repeatedly reminded the Knights that there's no real reason for the Bulls to continue the series (C-USA agreed to drop the fifth required game, though UCF likely would not have been the opponent).

USF is starting a five-year home-and-home series with Miami next season to be played the same day as the yearly UF-FSU game; the Bulls are hoping the series will become a permanent annual game.

Here's the beef from the UW fan's perspective.

The refs had "let them play" for the entire game - and there were plenty of post-first down celebrations more demonstrative than Jake's post-TD one and the pass defenses on both sides were pretty darn physical. Then the Huskies dramatically go down the field in 18 plays (including a 4th-and-10 conversion - punch it in with :02 left to tie pending the PAT - THEN the refs decide THAT's the time to call it "by the book"? REALLY? Yeah, if it was your team, you'd be pissed and saying "FUCK, yeah" to every national commentator's agreement that the call/rule sucked.

Yes, obviously a 35-yard FG is clearly not impossible, and the fact that it was blocked is pretty inexcusable. However, I think it's pretty ridiculous to say that the penalty had NO effect, especially given the spot the program is in and how hard they had to fight to get that TD.

And yes, it wasn't a robbery of a victory, since the game was headed to OT. But it WAS a robbery of a chance for a victory (over a ranked opponent) and UW needs as many chances as they can get.

Maryland had a pretty inspiring performance.

If you're a MTSU fan, Cal fan, or a fan of any other ACC team we have to play.

And yet Charlie Weis continues to get fellatio by Lou Holtz on ESPN and others for barely eeking out a win over San Diego State. Granted, Willingham isn't really any better, but it's ridiculous how Weis keeps getting a pass for his medicore coaching. Where are the calls to fire him like they were for Willingham? How in the hell did he earned a 10-yr extension when he hasn't come close to a bowl win?

Yeah way to help out the ACC there Terps. Thanks, as if the conference wasn't hanging just slightly ahead of the Big East in credibility right now.

Gotta be a homer and say though that after seeing Ponder and D-Vo in action and then Weatherford in cleanup....I never realized just how terrible Drew was until Saturday. I mean I knew he wasn't great, but those other two are so beyond him it's unreal. And Corey "Smurf" Surrency will be a hell of an NFL WR next year. Nine or ten wins is very doable for FSU this year. Mostly cause of starting with two crappy teams and the ACC being down, but still.

As for Miami, they sure are getting a lot of credit for that Florida game and I still don't get it. Florida showed they still have no running game and some other key problems. Miami's D looked solid, but then they've never really been a big problem the past few years anyway. The Miami offense is so terrible and I just don't think they're going to get any better as long as Nix is the coach. He's their Jeff Bowden in so many ways.

With our starting QB hurt (and played like crap against the freaking Blue Hens), I had no faith that they would be MTSU.

Like I said before, a combined 5 wins between the Terps and Middies and I'll be happy.

If they get a stop on 3rd and 9 with 5 minutes to go against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, they would have had the ball down 27-20.
Weis got to 2 BCS bowls and their respective payouts, Willingham got to a Gator Bowl after going into November unbeaten. Holtz won't say anything bad about Notre Dame, that is the way he leads life. If he had been on ESPN rather than at South Carolina during the Willingham era, he would have been the same way with Willingham. If you want to ignore the Notre Dame stuff, Holtz is actually pretty good. Plus, he's definitely not saying anything bad about Notre Dame in case things fall apart and Skip becomes a candidate.

It's worth noting that Weis did that with Willingham's players. With his own players? Not so much.

When are people going to finally realize that Notre Dame is irrelevant these days. They just can't get the athletes, despite supposedly having great recruiting classes every year.

Its gonna be a shame when two mediocre ACC/Big East teams get to play in a BCS game, while a team(s) like Missouri, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Penn St., or whoever gets left out for Cotton and Gator Bowl type bowls.
