So NaNoWriMo means National Novel Writing Month. www.nanowrimo.org Fair warning, the official site is slow as frozen molasses.
The goal is to start and finish a novel of at least 50,000 words.
In 2004, I started and finished a novel (about wrestling) called "Tail of the Rattler" getting the 50, 000 words done and finishing the story on November 31st. Serializing the whole thing here on the W.
In 2005, I started a novel about an IRA terrorist hiding out in Montreal, who is believed by the authorities to be dead. He sees London blown apart by the Underground bombings and decides to return to London to use his contacts to find the bombers and punish them, on the general principle that he was/is the only one allowed to blow up London.
At the time, I was struggling with a lack of energy caused by my as yet undiagnosed Diabetes. Then Eddie died and my energy just crashed, so I only got about a third done.
In 2006, I was still trying to find the right balance of medication for my Diabetes and recovering strength and weight. (At my worst, I was down to 110 pounds from my heaviest of 200 pounds.) So I didn't even start.
This year, I plan on starting and finishing another novel. I am going back to wrestling as a topic. And I plan on once again serializing it here on the W. My working title is Jobber.
Which means that there will be more in the Print section than threads about comic books and dead literary figures for a month I am afraid.
I think CRZ's official position on this is that he doesn't care as long as he doesn't have to read it.
After day one I'm at 4190 words...and so far most of them don't suck.
This'll be my fifth (official) attempt, and hopefully the first win. I took last year too seriously and quit after 20k as my internal editor started to pick it apart, but this year my story is silly and random and the perfect mix of "it's not stupid so it's worth writing" and "it's not that great or important so if it's not written well it's not the end of the world." Plus I have time, so there's no excuse this go-round.
There's a chance I'll put some excerpts, if not the whole thing, on my site eventually, but then there's a chance that monkeys will come flying out of my butt, too. I've found that people generally care more about the latter. ;P
It's also NaBloPoMo, for people (like me) who can't handle NaNoWriMo, but are willing to commit to a blog post a day for 30 days. I'm giving it a shot. I hate blogging when I have nothing to say, so it's going to be awful, but I'm-a do it. Here's mine - where's yours?
So what new comics are y'all getting Wednesday? I recently posted previews of some noteworthy Image comics coming out Wednesday: Walking Dead #106, Mind the Gap #7, and Savage Dragon #184. Preview all of them on one page.
