The 2002 season may not be over yet, but it's never too early to start looking at some QB controversies that are obviously going to be brewing. Let's take a quick look.

St. Louis Rams (Warner/Bulger)- Kurt Warner went winless this season and Bulger had only one blemish on his record. Bulger churned out performances the way Warner USED TO. Even Mike Martz, Warner's biggest supporter, is admitting that there will be some competition for the starting spot next year.

Pittsburg Steelers (Maddox/Stewart)- This would have been a controversy before today. But Maddox's inspiring performance today showed that he's the Steeler QB of the future. Stewart will have to bust his ass if he wants to even be a blip on the radar. And speaking of inspiring performances...

Cleveland Browns (Couch/Holcomb)- Kelly Holcomb went out with a bang today! In only his 4th start ever, he went out and shined, delivering an awe-inspiring performance. If Couch comes back in anything less than playing shape, Holcomb will be starting, guaranteed.

Seattle Seahawks (Dilfer/Hasselback)- There had to be a reason Mike Holmgren kept sticking with Hasselback. Either he saw something we didn't, or Hasselback had naked pictures of Holmgren, but there had to be a reason Holmgren would stick with him. He finally turned ON this season after Dilfer went down to injury. Interesting to see what'll happen once Dilfer returns.

Feel free to add thoughts and any other QB controversies you feel might be brewing.

Rams: Warner is due a huge signing bonus in February so count him as finished in St. Louis. You keep Bulger and use the money to sign some decent offensive lineman (ie. right tackle). Where Warner ends up is a mystery. Carolina, Chicago, Washington, and Phoenix are the early frontrunners.

Steelers: Stewart is likely to be traded, probably to Phoenix for a draft pick. But this all depends on the salary cap hit the Steelers would take.

Rule: If a player is traded all his prorated signing bonuses are accelerated into the current years cap.

Browns: This will be up in the air all through training camp.

Seahawks: Dilfer stays as a backup unless he gets traded.

From the infamous Wrestleline SS interview:

DTD: If you were to make changes in WCW, if you were in charge and not Ric Flair, what would they be?

SS: I'd get rid of all the old guys, and push the talent that has waited to get the push. The things they are doing, it's back in the 1980s. It's just bad, man. Flair doesn't even deserve to be on the show. You've got to get rid of all the old guys. Like what Vince did, they started pushing guys. Nobody knew who The Rock was 2 years ago. He made The Rock. Now The Rock just did Saturday Night Live. You've got to start with the young talent, talent people can relate to. Who are we trying to relate to if we've got a 50 year old man out there? Are we trying to relate, so a 50 year people and above will go out and buy a f*cking little toy? That ain't gonna happen. It's a f*cking joke.

Does it remind you of any show in particular?

So who's going to be the QB in Dallas, especially with Parcells as coach?

The Bears, though they need a QB desperately cannot afford to get into the Warner derby should it commence. With Roosevelt Colvin as a free agent this year, and then with Brian F'n Urlacher up next year, they have to save their pennies something fierce.

Supposedly, Bill likes Jake Plummer. Even as bad as he's been the past few years, he's still much better than the crap that has been under center for the Cowboys since Aikman left. This brings up the question yet again: Why the hell waste a 2nd round pick on Quincy Carter when most people didn't think he was good enough to draft at all? Thank God for Jerry Jones as Cowboys GM.

St. Louis: Warner will get his roster bonus. You know how much Martz loves him, and besides, one bad year is not deserving of exile. We wouldn't even be in this situation if Kurt had admitted he was banged up to begin with. Open competition in the summer: whoever wins starts, whoever loses will be traded after next year.

Pittsburgh: Kordell's days in the black and yellow are over. The only question is where the Steelers trade him. I think Denver will make a run at him (he's a better QB than Plummer).

Cleveland: Couch will remain the starter as long as he comes back healthy. The Browns have invested way too much in him, and I think he's primed for a breakout year... I know he hates getting booed by the Dawg Pound every other week.

Seattle: Hasselbeck will start, eventually. (The way he played the last month, it really leaves Holmgren no other choice, though he'll probably go through open season in the summer to give Dilfer a fair shot.)

There's also been talk about Jerry Jones possibly drafting Chris Simms if he's still available in the first round. Parcells coached his dad when he was with the Giants, so there would be a little history there. Personally, I am concerned about Simms in big game situations, but given that Dallas has had QB's that couldn't make an XFL roster since Aikman retired, anything would be an upgrade.

Don't forget the controversy that is brewing in Denver - Griese probably played himself out of job but his salary is structured in such a way that he is a bad hit to the cap if they let him go - can't see him keeping quiet about backing up Beuerlein

You can't do that because of the salary cap rules. If Warner loses, you are stuck paying him that salary to be a backup and in the event of a trade that roster bonus becomes accelerated into 2004's cap.

The Rams problem this year was an offensive line that was as solid as a piece of wet paper. There are serious problems at the tackle positions that need to be addressed in the offseason. Without 2 decent tackles they may just miss the playoffs next year as well.

It's silly to keep Stewart. The only reason he's stuck around this long is because Cowher, for some reason, loves this guy. He's never been anything more than a halfway decent backup, and the Steelers have two halfway decent backups who play wide reciever right now.

Well, they have to keep Warner around, because of this...

I hear team medics have told Rams higher-ups that Marc Bulger will be hard-pressed to ever make it through a 16-game season healthy. The Rams have to be apoplectic over what once seemed like a terrific quarterback situation but now is filled with question marks.

This is from Peter King's latest CNNSI column.

Texas Kelly,

You have a very good point. It seems as though there are a lot of tough decisions to be made in St. Louis. They need to decide what to do with the QB and OL positions.

St Louis: OK if you think Kurt Warner is in any danger of leaving the Rams youre crazy. Its not going to happen. This isnt one of those Tom Brady- Drew Bledsoe type things. Its Warners job unless he totally hoses preseason which I doubt. Warner pissed some people off by playing hurt but after all the success hes given them they are not going to ship him out because Bulger had six good games.

Pittsburgh: Kordell Stewart is done, thats obvious. But I hate when people shit on him. With the right coaching ion the right situation I think Kordell can be a top tier QB. Hes still young and healthy. Oh and I dont care what anyone thinks, Maddox isnt the answer. I think next season Pittsburgh fans will be calling for his head after he tanks.

Cleveland: Here Im not so sure if hes satying. True hes the franchise QB with all the money invested in him, BUT Id say hes on thin ice simply because Butch Davis didnt draft him so he has no allegiance to him.

Don't forget Baltimore. Jeff Blake was OK, but not earth shattering behind center for the Ravens. Chris Redman was the QB of the future, then promptly busted up his back and is now questionable what he's worth for the rest of his career. Add this to the fact that

1) The Ravens have boku cap room; and,
2) The Ravens will have either the # 10 or # 11 pick in the draft.

Leads most of us to think that Billick and Newsome will either make a run at a QB via free-agency or try to grab one of the 8 zillion decent QB's coming out in the draft. I just hope we don't wind up with Stewart/Plummer/Warner/Couch et al.

How can we forget Carolina? Rodney Peete is certainly not the QB for the future.

Does anyone think that the Eagles may shop Feeley? He does have one more year on his contract but Detmer is a FA and likely to resign with the Eagles. If someone calls offering a 4th round pick do you take it?

Kordell Stewart is still young? He'll be in his 9th season next year. That means when he leaves Pittsburgh it will not be as a young QB who can possibly get his career going, but instead he will be beginning the journeyman veteran QB portion of his career.

I beg to differ. I was actually wanting to stress the fact that he was he was still a healthy QB and relatively young at 30. But, Consider that Rich Gannon is seven years older than Kordell and hes playing the best football of his life, then I believe that Kordell can still have a great productive career. Lots of QB's play well into their late 30's. Steve Young didnt even become a full time starter till he was 30. And if nothing else hes still a year younger than Tommy Maddox whos taking his Job...
