(Click on the "DVD" thread icon to find threads going back to the beginning of the year...here are links to the previous four weeks: 5/22 - 5/29 - 6/5 - 6/12)

Hello.

A nice round 200 new releases make up the big DVD list for the week beginning Tuesday, 6/19. Compared to the mammoth efforts I had to put together the past couple of weeks, this was pretty smooth sailing...but that also means there's a lot of boring stuff you don't care about this week. Or, at least stuff I couldn't find an easy joke in writing about!

For those of you who haven't endured one of these lists before, it works thusly:

Hovering over links should provide you with Amazon's current price.

CLICKING on those links will take you to the Amazon shopping cart with a friendly referral from The W - consider making your purchase through us and it'll place a few coins in our tip jar!

Because Amazon sometimes can't come correct with the information, you will see some exposition from me (or, more likely, a bad joke) in addition to the listing along with IMDb icons (which can be clicked to take you to a movie's IMDb listing) or tv.com icons (which can be clicked to take you to the relevant episode list from tv.com)

All links should open in new windows so you can come right back here after your research! (If you want - we're totally flexible about that!)

Please tell a friend (or vote 'em up Digg/Netscape/&c. with a click of the icon of your choice at the bottom) about this post because it takes me a long time and I'm a big fan of more eyeballs!

Please feel free to add a reply and share your two cents about any of the listings you see here - show off your impressive knowledge, share your opinion about something you've seen, something you're looking forward to seeing, or make your own crappy jokes which are better than mine!

We also hope that if you buy something, you come back and tell us what you thought about it!

If you have something to say but don't want to say it publicly (or register for the board), you can also email me direct at CRZ.DVD@gmail.com!

A little travelling music, please....

PICK OF THE WEEK:
I got nothin'. I'll go with a DVD about a "can't go wrong" topic:
Live Performance (The W at Amazon) James Brown: The Golden Years - with narration by James Brown - this could totally suck....or totally rule. CASH IN NOW

Does anyone know if the Big O collection is the complete series? How many episodes are there in 325 minutes?

This is the first series, not the second season that was commissioned by [AS], correct?

Dvdtalk.com (dvdtalk.com) has a review of the 2-disc version of Secret of NIMH. Regarding the extras they say
    Originally posted by dvdtalk
This two-disc set proves to be much thinner than one would expect, but at least we get two engaging extras. Our centerpiece is a feature-length Audio Commentary with director/producer Don Bluth and animator/producer Gary Goldman, who talk at great length about the film's production and how it holds up today. Though Bluth and Goldman are unfortunately watching a rougher print of the film---as the complete restoration was not yet finished at the time of the recording---they also share plenty of secrets about the film's visual effects (referred to as being done "the hard way"). Overall, it's a thoroughly satisfying track that fans should appreciate.

Disc 2 includes "Secrets Behind the Secret" (14:25, presented in 1.33:1 format), a brief retrospective featurette with Bluth and Goldman. There's a modest amount of overlap between this and the audio commentary, but fans of NIMH will certainly want to have a look. Also included here are a few Games for the kids, but that's all she wrote. It's a shame we couldn't get a few art galleries, additional interviews, the film's original trailer or even a restoration demo, but at least there's been some effort here. No subtitles or captions have been included for these extras.

I'll probably pick it up at some point just to have the nice remastered version, but it would have been nice to get a really nice packed set. It seems like "kid movies", even when they have a substantial adult audience, never really get a very good dvd treatment, with the features being dumbed down or skimped on.

For you, I will research anime titles.

I am going to say it's all 13 episodes of the first series, and Bandai (bandai-ent.com) will back me up on it. (Their second series releases all appear to have "Big O II" in the titles.)

From ANN

Originally a thirteen-episode series, positive fan response internationally resulted in a second season co-produced by Cartoon Network, Sunrise, and Bandai Visual. The full 26-episode series re-aired from the beginning starting October 1, 2002 in Japan.

It appears the second season is the one that was co-produced by CN.

I saw about a month ago that Volume 3 of these beloved cartoons from my childhood were coming out.
I remember watching the Disney Afternoon when they'd have Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Chip 'N' Dale Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, (and later replaced the older shows with Darkwing Duck and Goof Troop). Wikipedia says that was between 7 and 10 when those aired.
Then suddenly the Disney Afternoon seemed a little childish. Bonkers? Aladdin? Gargoyles? I don't think so.

Fox Kids (and later Kids' WB) became the one with all the good cartoons. "Tiny Toon Adventures", "Bobby's World", "Animaniacs", "Eek The Cat", "Life With Louie", and "Pinky and the Brain". I was 15 when "Pinky and the Brain" ended, and it was still awesome.

In summary, you have my purchase sir. I will be buying the "Pinky and the Brain" complete series set. I'm not sure about "Animaniacs" because there's one more DVD volume yet to come. The funny thing about Animaniacs is that the first season was 65 episodes, so this third set finally gets through the first season. The last 10 episodes on the 3rd set and the 25 episodes on the 4th set cover the other 4 seasons.

LATE ADDITION: I've just noticed that amazon is screwing people on the Pinky and the Brain set. It sells for $121.49. The three volumes by themselves are $31.99, $32.49, and $31.49, which comes to $95.97. The Animaniacs volumes do give a discount to the 3-volume set.

EDIT: Childish was the wrong word. "Cartoons I don't like" is more appropriate.

I don't remember Bonkers and didn't care for Aladdin, but Gargoyles was anything BUT childish. The show had plots that ran for multiple episodes with twists that made sense in the end. The Goliath-Elisa love story was well done, and there were lots of characters who interacted in interesting and sensible ways. The show ruled! At least until it became The Gargoyle Chronicles or whatever they called it when it jumped to Saturday morning. THEN it became childish and sucked. But the first two seasons were awesome.

OMG OMG OMG I had to look it up. Extras! (movieweb.com) The last release only had the trailer on it. Yes I already have it. Yes I want this version too.

I Am the Cheese (1983) Based on the novel - Robert MacNaughton, Hope Lange, Don Murray, Robert Wagner, Cynthia Nixon
Dude are you shitting me? I was obsessed with this movie like I was obsessed with The Manhattan Project and I was obsessed with Robert MacNaughton like I was obsessed with Christopher Collet. And Cynthia Nixon is in both these movies. SPOOKY. Now when can I finally get Firstborn (allmovie.com) on DVD, bring it.
