Hello.
It feels almost like a vacation this week, with only 182 blurbs for you to peruse. I'm hopeful that although the QUANTITY is down, the QUALITY is way, way up - eh, who'm I kidding.
YOU have a tax refund! BLOW it on DVDs!
Please, PLEASE, drop a line or two and talk about how seeing items on this list kick you right in the gut, grab your gonads and bring tears to your eyes.
Or, you know, you could buy something that catches your fancy. We don't mind that either. We're all about conspicuous consumption!
By the way, any of you folks that have bought something and watched it: why haven't we been blessed with your review, yet? Do your reviews suck or something? I'LL be the judge of that.
Whoring for Diggs and Netscape votes doesn't work so I certainly wouldn't do it here, unless it was some sneaky, passive-aggressive technique that you didn't notice until I pointed it out - DAMMIT
For those of you coming here for the first time, IMDb icons take you to information pages at the Internet Movie Database, while tv.com icons take you to episode lists at tv.com. There are also many other fine supplemental links to augment the sometimes meager information provided by/to Amazon. Clicking on links will ALWAYS open a new window so you can come right back here with a quick close!
Check back Monday when we'll have Amazon's Top 24 pre-orders and any late updates!
I think we're all accustomed to it, so let's stay in our comfort zone and begin with a
PICK OF THE WEEK: The Venture Bros. - Season Two (The W at Amazon) (2006) A no-brainer. The most perfect creation in the history of television is back with another 13 episodes on 2 discs and I bet there's some awesome extras as well If you haven't seen season one, you should probably get them both and watch them in order, or things might make less sense. The Venture Bros.: Seasons One and Two (2003-6)
MOVIES
Freedom Writers (Widescreen Edition) (2007) Hilary Swank - Is this the first major 2007 release out on DVD this year? Freedom Writers (Full Screen Edition)

The Last King of Scotland (Widescreen Edition) (UK, 2006) Forest Whitaker's Oscar turn as Idi Amin The Last King of Scotland (Full-Screen Edition)
NEW VERSIONS OF MOVIES YOU ALREADY BOUGHT: Spider-Man 2.1 - Unrated, Extended Cut (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (2004/2007) Sony's got some nerve - EIGHT minutes of new footage - pay up, suckers Spider-Man [UMD for PSP] (2002)

I saw a screener of this when it was still called The Trouble With Frank last year. The name change will not help it.
Noteable only for Cary Elwes' COMPLETELY over-the-top performance and spectacularly awful hairpiece/perm. Otherwise, it's pretty much laugh-free, and it's hard to believe that Arthur Hiller had anything to do with it.

It's not noted on the package.
So I guess WWE aren't the only ones not willing to pay for theme songs.

It's ANNOYING. I don't think it's unreasonable to want the same experience on DVD that you had first watching a show on television. If you have to make a wholesale change to something so familiar, it can't help but be something different that what you grew up with.
Granted, we're talking about "George Lopez" here, but let me harp on the fact that when we get "WKRP" next week, and it's going to have more holes in it than a block of swiss cheese because of "rights issues," THAT is definitely going to have an (emotional, probably) impact on the people who grew up on the original. Hell, go over to Amazon and look up any "Baywatch" season set - any set of reviews will have much stronger remarks. I tend to make fun of those reviewers, right up until it happens to a show that I'M passionate about. Fortunately for me, I got lucky with "Miami Vice" and they managed to come through. It didn't happen with "Mission Hill." We can go on and on...

| #8 Posted on 13.4.07 2241.09 | Instant Rating: 5.16 | Actually, I personally would be quite excited about a DVD containing thirteen of JFK's greatest speeches; unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be it. Consider the following, garnered from The History Place (historyplace.com) : Inaugural address (Ask not what your country can do for you..."): 13 1/2 minutes 1962 Rice University ("We choose to go to the moon..."): 16 1/2 minutes October 1962 address to the nation (Cuban Missile Crisis): 17 minutes 1963 Berlin ("Ich bin ein Berliner"): 9 minutes
The above four speeches have a total approximate length of fifty-six minutes; according to Amazon, the total run time for the DVD is fifty-eight minutes. I think it's therefore safe to conclude that this is not a collection of thirteen speeches, but more a collection of snippets and sound bites. Which is a shame.

Seen it. Liked it more than most. Reviewed it AT THIS VERY SITE: http://the-w.com/thread.php/id=31942
La Haine
Is REALY REALLY REALLY good. It takes about the alienation of the youth in the French suburbs years before they burst into flames. It essentially predicts the riots that happenned last year. The French is very difficult to understand so even someone fluent as I am is forced to use sub-titles. The dialect used is similar in a way to the Cockney Rhyming slang.
Last King of Scotland
Seen it. Liked it with reservations. I am working on a combined review of that, The Queen, Curse of the Golden Flower and 300. I'll try and finish it for tomorrow, once I do the review of the ALF (joshi) show.
Cutie Honey
I saw it at Fantasia about three years ago. CRZ basically nailed it. It is a live action anime. Not just based on an anime, but shot in a bouncy bubblegum anime style as well. Cutie Honey changes costumes more often than Elizabeth Hurley in Bedazzled. The original anime featured Cutie Honey getting naked a the drop of (another) hat and that does not happen in the live action movie, but she does end up in her underwear an awful lot which is arguably better.
There were some complaints on Amazon that the film was being cropped for the DVD, so you might be better off finding a Japanese import.
Teri Weigel
No doubt cementing my reputation as the go-to guy on classic porn stars. (It's a calling.)
Teri was a Playboy centrefold and in addition to a bunch of Playboy films, appeared in Predator 2 and The Decline of American Civilization: The Metal Years. After a horrific car accident, Playboy stopped returning her calls, so she turned to porn to pay the bills.
John F. Kennedy
What was the speech that Darwyn Cooke quoted in Absolute Frontier? Because that was a good one.

Gay dudes -- definitely. Highlander (or pro wrestling!) is a much "hotter" choice for straight women. :-)

OH HELL YES. This movie is such a confluence of awesome it's hard to know where to begin:
- Keith Gordon (lenswoman.com)--his directorial debut! he probably still had hair then! - Robert Cormier (en.wikipedia.org) - Ilan Motherfucking Mitchell-Smith (austinchronicle.com) - Jenny Wright (perso.orange.fr)--dude, I totally wanted to BE her - Harold Parker Chasen (imdb.com) - MY BODYGUARD (afan.dk) - Wally Ward a.k.a. Andy French (msnhill.com) a.k.a. Hodges (hodges.ning.com) a.k.a. Wallace Langham (findarticles.com)--man, I totally forgot that happened--the Internet, it's something else
It's not perfect by any means, but dang it's good. Finally I can replace my worn-out sell-through VHS.
Keith Gordon--that kid's got talent!

What was the speech that Darwyn Cooke quoted in Absolute Frontier? Because that was a good one.
I must confess ignorance regarding Darwyn Cooke's work; however, if he was quoting JFK speaking on the "New Frontier", then he was most likely quoting Kennedy's acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.Originally posted by John F Kennedy For I stand tonight facing west on what was once the last frontier. From the lands that stretch three thousand miles behind me, the pioneers of old gave up their safety, their comfort and sometimes their lives to build a new world here in the West. They were not the captives of their own doubts, the prisoners of their own price tags. Their motto was not "every man for himself"--but "all for the common cause." They were determined to make that new world strong and free, to overcome its hazards and its hardships, to conquer the enemies that threatened from without and within.
Today some would say that those struggles are all over--that all the horizons have been explored--that all the battles have been won-- that there is no longer an American frontier.
But I trust that no one in this vast assemblage will agree with those sentiments. For the problems are not all solved and the battles are not all won--and we stand today on the edge of a New Frontier--the frontier of the 1960's--a frontier of unknown opportunities and perils-- a frontier of unfulfilled hopes and threats.
Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom promised our nation a new political and economic framework. Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal promised security and succor to those in need. But the New Frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises--it is a set of challenges. It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them. It appeals to their pride, not to their pocketbook--it holds out the promise of more sacrifice instead of more security.
But I tell you the New Frontier is here, whether we seek it or not. Beyond that frontier are the uncharted areas of science and space, unsolved problems of peace and war, unconquered pockets of ignorance and prejudice, unanswered questions of poverty and surplus. It would be easier to shrink back from that frontier, to look to the safe mediocrity of the past, to be lulled by good intentions and high rhetoric--and those who prefer that course should not cast their votes for me, regardless of party.
But I believe the times demand new invention, innovation, imagination, decision. I am asking each of you to be pioneers on that New Frontier. My call is to the young in heart, regardless of age--to all who respond to the Scriptural call: "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed."
For courage--not complacency--is our need today--leadership--not salesmanship. And the only valid test of leadership is the ability to lead, and lead vigorously. A tired nation, said David Lloyd George, is a Tory nation--and the United States today cannot afford to be either tired or Tory.
There may be those who wish to hear more--more promises to this group or that--more harsh rhetoric about the men in the Kremlin--more assurances of a golden future, where taxes are always low and subsidies ever high. But my promises are in the platform you have adopted--our ends will not be won by rhetoric and we can have faith in the future only if we have faith in ourselves.
For the harsh facts of the matter are that we stand on this frontier at a turning-point in history. We must prove all over again whether this nation--or any nation so conceived--can long endure--whether our society--with its freedom of choice, its breadth of opportunity, its range of alternatives--can compete with the single-minded advance of the Communist system.
Can a nation organized and governed such as ours endure? That is the real question. Have we the nerve and the will? Can we carry through in an age where we will witness not only new breakthroughs in weapons of destruction--but also a race for mastery of the sky and the rain, the ocean and the tides, the far side of space and the inside of men's minds?
Are we up to the task--are we equal to the challenge? Are we willing to match the Russian sacrifice of the present for the future--or must we sacrifice our future in order to enjoy the present?
That is the question of the New Frontier. That is the choice our nation must make--a choice that lies not merely between two men or two parties, but between the public interest and private comfort--between national greatness and national decline--between the fresh air of progress and the stale, dank atmosphere of "normalcy"--between determined dedication and creeping mediocrity.
All mankind waits upon our decision. A whole world looks to see what we will do. We cannot fail their trust, we cannot fail to try.

Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier is built around the idea that there was a period in DC comics history where the heroes almost disappeared before being reimagined and reinvented mainly by Julius Schwarz.
In the DC continuity this is explained by the Justice Society disbanding when Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee insist that they remove their masks to prove their patriotism.
In DC continuity, the Justice League first collected to fight Starro the Conqueror. Darwyn tells an epic story stretching from the end of the Second World War and what really happened to the tragic World War Two team The Losers, touching on the dissolution of the Justice Society and climaxing with an untold story of the first gathering of what would become the Justice League several months before they fought Starro including some allies of the Justice League who were never really members like Doc Magnus and Adam Strange and the Challengers of the Unknown and the Doom Patrol.
Darwyn starts the speech earlier...
But edits it slightly mainly to remove references to the campaign, to Nixon and other politicians and to the Russians.

The times are too grave, the challenge too urgent, and the stakes too high-- to permit the customary passions of political debate. We are not here to curse the darkness, but to light the candle that can guide us through that darkness to a safe and sane future.
...
Today our concern must be with that future. For the world is changing. The old era is ending. The old ways will not do.
Abroad, the balance of power is shifting. There are new and more terrible weapons-- new and uncertain nations-- new pressures of population and deprivation. One-third of the world, it has been said, may be free-- but one-third is the victim of cruel repression--and the other one- third is rocked by the pangs of poverty, hunger and envy. More energy is released by the awakening of these new nations than by the fission of the atom itself.
...
The world has been close to war before--but now man, who has survived all previous threats to his existence, has taken into his mortal hands the power to exterminate the entire species some seven times over.
Here at home, the changing face of the future is equally revolutionary. The New Deal and the Fair Deal were bold measures for their generations--but this is a new generation.
A technological revolution on the farm has led to an output explosion--but we have not yet learned to harness that explosion usefully, while protecting our farmers' right to full parity income.
An urban population explosion has overcrowded our schools, cluttered up our suburbs, and increased the squalor of our slums.
A peaceful revolution for human rights--demanding an end to racial discrimination in all parts of our community life--has strained at the leashes imposed by timid executive leadership.
...
There has also been a change-- a slippage-- in our intellectual and moral strength. Seven lean years of drouth and famine have withered a field of ideas. Blight has descended on our regulatory agencies--and a dry rot, beginning in Washington, is seeping into every corner of America-- in the payola mentality, the expense account way of life, the confusion between what is legal and what is right. Too many Americans have lost their way, their will and their sense of historic purpose.
...

Introducing Abraham - The Secret Behind "The Secret" "On this inspirational DVD program, Esther and Jerry Hicks present the teachings of the Non-Physical entity Abraham, whom Esther calls infinite intelligence and Jerry refers to as the purest form of love I have ever encountered. The Law of Attraction is never more evident than in the pulse of an Abraham-Hicks Art of Allowing Workshop. And this is one of the years best, The Secret Behind The Secret...so sit back, relax, allow, and attract! Abraham defies explanation. Defies reason. Defies logic. Defies what many call common sense. So forget what you re seeing. And concentrate on what you re hearing. It is the sound of your heart. Beating a little faster and a little truer. It is the sound of Abraham straight up. And once you have heard it, your life will never be the same again. This fascinating DVD, includes segments on the Trilogy, The Meaning of Life and much, much more!" I felt I had to share that entire description with you for some reason. Sorry
