A quick scan of our threads for 2008 thus far reveals that only the week of 1/1 saw less activity than this week. I guess the thinking is that everyone would rather go out and play during the summer than stay indoors and watch DVDs. Me... I'm a big fan of air conditioning, and I CAN'T be alone there. But along the same lines, I certainly do not mind an easy week!
And so we have a meager 139 releases - 132 DVD + 7 Blu-Ray - below. All but three are out on Tuesday, 7/15 and the three that aren't have their release dates noted in parentheses.
If you are so inclined, learn more by hovering, visiting the related IMDb and/or tv.com links, and visiting Amazon!
Purchases are always appreciated, but not mandatory!
LET'S GO
PICK OF THE WEEK
No Substitute for Victory: From Vietnam to Iraq (The W at Amazon) John Wayne's pro-Vietnam war documentary/speechifyin' (1970) combined with "new interactive sequences" to...draw parallels to our current Iraq war? Wow. I have to admit I'm a sucker for super political John Wayne because he's just so .... RIGHT (winger). I don't know how much hearing, say, Tony Blankley bring it up to 2007 (or whenever they put this out) adds value. More info about this release comes from the distributor, who didn't want to do their OWN reviews, I guess, so they just completely stole a DVDTalk review reposted directly at their own site (roangroup.com).
Reno 911 - The Complete Fifth Season (Comedy Central, 2008) I had no idea this was still on the air - and if TV.com is right this brings you right up to the episode that aired just last Thursday
Swamp Thing: the Series Vol. 2 (USA, 1992-3) Includes what tv.com lists as the second season along with episodes 1-9, 12-13, 25, 30, 33 and 37 (if I counted right) of what tv.com calls the third season. I guess this is more of that "in the order they were meant to be seen business?" You know what, maybe you should just go check the episode list at Shout! Factory (shoutfactorystore.com) yourself.
Laredo, Disc 1 According to Amazon review, one disc from [amazon B000TLTCOK]this "Best of" set[/amazon\ The Guns of Will Sonnett, Disc One Presumably something similarly compiled from a different western
SUPER DUPER TV MOVIE EVENT OF THE WEEK Final Approach (Hallmark, 2007) WOW what a cast list: Dean Cain, Anthony Michael Hall, Ernie Hudson, Sunny Mabrey, Lea Thompson, William Forsythe, Barry Livingston, Tracey Gold - and that's just the first eight of the 70+ names (Richard Roundtree!) listed - as an added bonus, I believe this is the "European movie theatrical version" which hopefully means more swearing and (Anthony Michael Hall's) boobs
Meet Bill (2007) Aaron Eckhart, Jessica Alba, Elizabeth Banks, Beyer High graduate Timothy Olyphant - more info at First Look (firstlookstudios.com) Meet Bill Same exact thing, more expensive?
Penelope (UK/USA, 2006) Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Catherine O'Hara, Reese Witherspoon
GUESS THEY HAD TO PUT *SOMETHING* ON THE BOX TO SELL IT Asylum (2007) Sarah Roemer - "From the director of Final Destination 2!"
MOVIE FOR KIM OF THE WEEK Insanitarium (2008) Jesse Metcalfe, Peter Stormare, Kiele Sanchez and (get this) Olivia Munn - directed by Jeff Buhler - lotta talent in that room - not to be confused with previous film "Asylum" - no, this is INSANITARIUM - cannibalism of the week - more info at Sony (sonypictures.com) and do not miss the trailer at CraveOnline via (shocktillyoudrop.com)
ninjas... The Ninja Collection Godfrey Ho does what he does best/worst - write and direct Hong Kong films about...geez, I forgot already. TItles are Bionic Ninja, Death Code: Ninja, Ninja: American Warrior and Ninja in the Killing Field - more info on the collection at Navarre (navarre.com)
Doom Asylum (uncut edition) (1987) Back then, they were probably hyping up Patty Mullen and Ruth Collins instead of here in 2008 where it's all about Kristin Davis' first film appearance Held Up (1999) Jamie Foxx, Nia Long Secretary (2002) James Spader, Maggie Gyllenhaal Lenny The Wonder Dog (2004) Sammy Kahn, Voice of Andy Richter, TV's Craig Ferguson - this is probably as bad as it sounds Lenny the Wonderdog Same thing, same price
Short Order (Ireland/Germany/UK, 2005) The Mighty Celt (Ireland, 2005) Gillian Anderson, Robert Carlyle - more info and trailer link at Cinequest (cinequestonline.org) Guardians (2006) More info and trailer at Lightyear (lightyear.com) Trapped Ashes (USA/Japan/Canada, 2006) Horror anthology
Double Dagger (2008) (Not much) more info at Laguna (lagunaproductions.com) but at least we can see that they undertake their heist in cool lucha masks! Poison Sweethearts (2008) More info and trailer at Tempe (store.tempevideo.com)
PRO WRESTLING GUERRILLA: PWG Sells Out Before you look for more info at Big Vision (bigvisionentertainment.com), the Amazon reviewer has the actual match list, so go there first.
The Sex Thief (UK, 1973) Hair everywhere! She Got A... Stupid Booty DAMN - graphic on box helpfully offers highly descriptive (yet pithy) "azz overload"
ET CETERA
ADVERTS
Classic TV Commercials: Ones We Never Forgot "3 discs, 110 commercials" - bonus features bring it past the six hour mark (because I doubt it's a bunch of 3+ minute commercials...?) - if I ever have six hours to watch classic commercials, it will be time to die Classic TV Commercials: What We Lusted For Not to mention here's ANOTHER 3 discs, 105 commercials and over six hours TV Commercials- The Ultimate Collection And with their usual fantastic logic, the box set comibing the two costs MORE than purchasing them separately - I would be AMAZED these guys are still in business, but I'm pretty sure slapping together "public domain" releases is a low overhead business - in fact, what aren't WE doing that?!
Them's it, folks. Be back Monday and we'll see if we can prune it even more with cancellations and rescheduling, and we'll see which 24 of these make it to the tippy top of the preorder list from the people paying attention!
Here's where YOU can reply, or email me at CRZ.DVD@gmail.com. Thanks!
That Devil May Cry anime is pretty good, but you only get four episodes on each disc which isn't really worth $20. I'd wait for the inevitable boxed set if you're interested.
Then again, if you're interested, you probably already bought them.

Now down to 128 releases, this top 24 preorder list represents almost 20% of what's available tomorrow! ...which explains the high placement of anime titles this week:
