and for the lazy here is the top 20
20) Sam Kinison 19) Bill Hicks 18) Jonathan Winters 17) Don Rickles 16) Ellen Degeneres 15) David Letterman 14) Bob Newhart 13) Robin Williams 12) Jerry Seinfeld 11) Johnny Carson 10) Eddie Murphy 9) Roseanne Barr 8) Bill Cosby 7) Rodney Dangerfield 6) Steve Martin 5) Chris Rock 4) Woody Allen 3) Lenny Bruce 2) George Carlin 1) Richard Pryor
To me it was hard to argue some of them though I do think Bob Hope (who came in 25) probably should have been top 20, and I would have put Roseanne a little bit further down. But as a guy who has seen a lot of stand up and has actually seen video or heard tapes, CDs, records of the people on the list its hard to argue who was included, and other than a little rearranging I pretty much agree with the rankings.

I am really surprised Richard Lewis isn't in the top 20 but I guess he isn't everyone's cup of tea. Roseanna actually WAS very funny in her day. If anyone has any doubt, about Richard Pryor being number 1, go download a few mp3 from his greatest hits CD and become a believer. Between him and Lenny Bruce, almost everyone has "borrowered" (i.e. stolen) from him.
EDIT Going though the entire list, unless I am blind they don't have Margret Cho! WTF? They have Gallangher but no Cho? I am quite surprised. It's Comedy Central so obviously they know more about comedians then me....

He ranted about it for the whole show, while of course catching shit about it from the guests. Even Quinn mentioned he was bumped up 20 spots just because he hosts a show on Comedy Central. I don't think he belongs on the list at all.

Carson's placement makes a lot more sense if you take into account that sketch comedy was a staple of the Tonight Show for years.

That's the problem with Andy. You either got what he was doing and LOVED him, or thought he was a psycho and didn't deserve to be on the list. I think we need more comics like him, willing to "think out of the box".

If Conan got in for his monologues, then you might see rioting in the streets. Conan's monologue is always the worst part of his show. That's probably why he only does 3-4 jokes and stops. Even Jay Leno hits sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love Conan's show. I just don't like the monologue.
Anyways, my main gripe about the show is that I find most women comedians to be terribly unfunny. I understand that they had to put Elayne Boosler on the list for pure longevity, but I don't remember ever laughing at one joke she told. Roseanne was awful too, and the Judy's (Tenuta and Gold) are both dreadful. There are plenty of bad male comedians as well, but I just think that outside of Wanda Sykes, most female comedians just miss the mark.
I've seen The Rock in movies. I've seen The Rock wrestle and maintain an acting career. And you, sir, are no The Rock.

Miller has had more than his share of television and movie bombs, which doesn't help his case much. Ditto for Leary, who was put 30 places below Bill Hicks as a sign that they knew from whom Leary borrowed his schtick.
As a counterpoint, a friend of mine was furious that Seinfeld was as high as #12, and I reasoned it was partly because he hadn't burned his reputation on much of anything outside his namesake sitcom lately. Every other cast member has at least one failed sitcom on the resume.
Kaufman could easily bump Ellen DeGeneres out of the top 20 without a complaint from me.
My kvetches: * Woody Allen at #4? Yes, he's funny, but when I think Woody, I think "movie director," not "stand-up comic." * Ray Romano does standup? * Wait, Jay Leno's _supposed_ to be funny? Jay Leno over Jack Motherfucking Benny and Milton Berle? Get the hell out of here. * Colin Quinn's 20+ places over Eddie Izzard, Dom Irrera AND George Wallace? WTF?
