...should have been one missed movie! (ZING! In your face Gene Shalit!!!) (I'm gonna do my damnest to go and see atleast two new movies a week this year and do reviews of them. Yep 104 movie reviews by ME... I can just feel the annoyance already exuding from my monitor.)
I was rather dissappointed in this. Shannyan Sossamon is really hot and Ed (kooky) Burns is usually entertaining but in this film Shannyan wore fucking sweaters and showed no skin what so ever and Ed burns was so bored by the whole mess that there were even a couple scenes where he visably yawned on camera. No, really, sure his character was tired, but I'm sure that wasn't why he was yawning.
The story was decent, but it reallt screwed up with the twist ending. I was perfectly happy to believe that the mother of the little girl was a bitch and was abusing her, but damnit if they had to go and fuck it up with bringing in another character (an older sister? ...fucking hell!) in the last 15 minutes of the film to change the films story. I blame that asshole M. Night Shyamalan for causing all horror, mystery, and thriller films to have the 'what-a-twist!'(tm.) ending. There can't just be a movie where the killer is what he/she is without trying to outwit the audience. It's starting to become really fucking annoying.
The death scenes were even stupid, with one exception. The one bright spot in this whole mess was with Ray Wise (Laura Palmer's dad/killer!) as a 'Reality Tv producer who finds out about the phone calls and wants to put one soon to be victim on camera at the 'time of death' and have someone perform an exorcism on said victims phone... yeah, an exorcism on a phone! Interesting idea and it was about the only scene where people looked alive and were 'doing stuff' instead of sleepwalking through the motions and mumbling lines.
Another problem with this film was the film itself. It was very dark. The whole film looked like the color was faded from it. I guess you could say it was bad lighting. It looked like someone used a camcorder and had the tinting at the lowest setting. This also didn't help in my enjoyment of the film.
Overall, as I said in the first sentence, I kinda wish I'd missed this one.
I saw it in the theater as well. The color was just fine on mine though, like they say, your mileage may vary. Anyway, it was a totally acceptable movie until, as you pointed out, the "SURPRISE!" ending. They could have just let the thing play out the way it was looking like it would, with the mom being bat shit crazy.
What happened to Ed Burns? Really, remember when The Brothers McMullen came out and every critic and their sister were wetting themselves talking about how great he was and what a force he was going to be? Shame really.
Shannyan Sossamon IS really hot, however the chick who played Taylor Anthony, (her name is Ana Claudia Talancón) is head and shoulders above her in the HOTNESS factor.
The story could have been fun, but was bogged down with the kid back story.
