Both women reacted strongly to what looked like a standard punch by Victoria. Victoria shook her wrist in pain, and Pheonix stumbled backward against the ropes. It looked like she genuinely clocked Beth on the side of the head. I'm sad to see her injured. I really dug the way Victoria worked her over in the ropes, finishing it with a Stunner. And I always like TAKA's piledriver.

The Lovely Mrs. Tracker pointed something out: She doesn't not sure JR knew what he was saying when he repeated the line, "When watching the film, there were times where I don't think Kane was acting." Judging by the reviews, no one else thought Kane was doing anything close to acting.

I was surprised to see Eugene and Striker against each other again after Striker decisively and cleanly beat Eugene a few weeks back.

I had a short blackout while watching the Highlanders segment. I recognized we were seeing the rare pre-established tag-team coming to Raw (versus mismatched midcarder teams) and thought they had to get the title push. But I couldn't remember who had the titles. I remembered later it was my beloved evil cheerleaders.

The One Night Stand card does look a lot like a WWE pay per view, but remember that last year they were able to bring in a number of old ECW guys not under contract for a one-shot show while this time around, they are limited to only using ECW people who are now under WWE contract for the new ECW venture. As such, the ECW talent pool is limited compared to last year and has to be supplemented by WWE people. And that will continue as WWE developmental guys and older WWE stars like Test are rumored to be part of ECW.

Also, only the five top matches have been announced and it was the same last year, where we only knew a few matches going in. The ECW guys under contract will probably have some undercard matches against each other, and they are likely to debut some of their newer ECW characters like CM Punk and that vampire group Sci-Fi Channel supposedly asked for.

Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton is a total Smackdown match but now that Kurt "is ECW" we're supposed to think it's interpromotional. Just play along, wouldja?

I was glad to see Angle actually get some mic time and remind us that he used to cut entertaining promos, rather than just snarl and shout and wear his mouthguard.

Caught the Jamal sign...there were some amusingly silly ones at the end too, i.e. "Vince Walks Funny."

Beth appeared to have a bloody lip/chin at the end of the match.

Good promo work from everyone tonight (I liked Lawler's promo to Tazz a lot.)

Utter negligience from Haas, almost inexcusable. It certainly isn't going to get him pushed to the IC title or anything certainly.

Orton sounded tanked. God bless Randy Orton. Who's going to get more genuine heel heat at ONS, Cena or Randy? Both of them have a real chance of being eaten alive by those fans.

One of the better Raws this year. All storylines were moved forward pretty good.

You know, I'm really starting to suspect that this "masked Kane" is NOT a supernatural apparition from Kane's dark & demented past, but is in fact just another large wrestler who is wearing Kane's old costume. I could be wrong, though.

But there's NO question that HHH is now the single most important, #1 wrestler in the ENTIRE company. Whether or not this is more to do with HHH elevating his work to reach rare over-ness... or is more to do with the WWE's failure to create another Stone Cold, Rock, etc. megastar is probably something that folks would have differing opinions about....

I always sorta assumed that the point of Rowdy Roddy Piper was that he was of Scottish descent -- which he was, wasn't he? -- not that he was actually from Scotland. I mean, he didn't even try to do an accent.

I was thinking something similar, though I was thinking that Mysterio could even retain, then throw the belt down and defect - he is an ECW alum after all. Given that the world title has a lineage to an Eric Bischoff to Triple H gift it would make more sense to discard that belt, plus it would weaken Smackdown which isn't exactly new ground for WWE.

Am I the only one who is thinking that the Lillian deal is a work? It looked like Hass accelerated on his entrance so he could hit her. Even if it was a real accident I can now smell a Hass/Viscera feud developing.

I agree with the Highlander - Bushwhacker comparisons, but was glad to see a "real" tag team introduced.

Vampiro and his beer/blood gut wouldn't be too bad. I still hold out hope for Manticore and Mansquito to appear.

As for Roddy Piper's Scottishness, in an interview he said he learned to play the bagpipes and wore a kilt whilst he was in a marching band. They called him Roddy The Piper.

When he took up wrestling professionally, that name stuck, it became Roddy Piper. They think what is more Scottish that bagpipes and a kilt !

I couldn't believe it. I had to rewind and play it back TWICE to be sure of what I saw and I thought they would have had a better camera angle if it had been a work. Also, the match was almost over before JR even mentioned that it had happened, leading me to believe that he wasn't sure of her condition and thus not sure what to say. Finally, if it had been a work leading to a feud with Viscera, Viscera would have been ready for the run-in/beatdown on Haas. I think Haas was just careless and it will probably end with him doing a humiliating J.O.B. as a payback. Maybe Viscera can teach him how to take better care of the ring announcer.

Actually, very incorrect. This is nothing like the Invasion. An Invasion, be it the botched 2001 angle or the nWo angle of the 1990's, is about a renegade group coming into an established promotion and "taking it over." This is NOT what is happening here with the new ECW.

ECW is not trying to take WWE over by any means. ECW is launching as part of the WWE, BUT they are doing so with the intent of carving their own distinct brand identity being as different from WWE's as possible (a mix of old ECW and a new updated vision, represented by Kurt Angle.)

ECW is launching off of WWE's back and hoping to take one of WWE's World Championships with them when they do, which grants them instant legitimacy and notoriety for their brand and shows. As such, unlike an Invasion, which can't succeed (the nWo could never have supplanted WCW/the Alliance could never have killed the WWF), ECW can succeed in their goal of being a renegade promotion within WWE, but separate, and can be "anti-establishment" by embarrassing their parent company by stealing their World Championship(s). It's really very simple.

I always thought they should have tied it all together by saying that Trish (according to Victoria) sabotaged V's modeling career and left her with no choice but to take up the seedy life of a prostitute. But she was actually pretty happy about being a ho, so maybe that wouldn't have worked so well.

Anybody able to locate the Beth Phoenix jaw breaker on youtube?

And, just when you get tired of him, Lawler shows you he can still cut a better promo than 90% of the current roster.

Why he isnt teaching the young guys how to promo is beyond me.

Haven't looked on Youtube, but if someone's looking to put it up, the broken jaw happens on the in-the-ropes-jawbreaker (co-incidentally enough) you can actually hear the crack of Beth's jaw before Victoria hits that mat. Kind of sick, actually.
