Why I hate (love) Lost...the most anticipated episode of Lost's history is next week, but they have me dying to see more of Sawyer, Widmore and Man In Black. Sawyer cutting through the bullshit and getting right in Widmore's face was excellent.

Yay - more strangers with guns.

1) Jacob is the enemy of Man In Black.
2) It was implied that Widmore and Man In Black are enemies.
3) Yet, Bram (who works for Team Jacob) told Miles last season that working for Widmore means working for the wrong side.
4) I am confused.

Sideways-Anthony Cooper is revealed to be a confidence man, the same as Original Cooper. This makes me really want to know how Sideways-Locke became paralyzed.

When Locke talks to Kate about his own crazy mother, then draws a parallel to Claire and Aaron, is he alluding to a repeating circular pattern of events, or did he allude to the fact that he is Aaron?!?

What a delightful play on words the episode title is. "Recon". Because Sawyer did some recon on Hydra Island for Smoke Locke, and in both Island and Sideways realities, James Ford did some re-conning.

On the Island, Sawyer didn't have sex with Kate, although he had that wistful moment with Kate's old pretty dress in the bear cage when he remembered those good old times when he and Freckles did the nasty in the past-y. But in Not Lost, Detective Jimmy Ford, LAPD, did both Jodi-Lyn O'Keefe and the returning (missed by me) Charlotte Lewis. Not bad at all! Then Jimmy ran into Kate in the end. Some guys get all the luck. (Except when Charlotte told him he blew it. Which he did. Totally. She probably does have a whip.)

I know CBS is working on a Hawaii Five-0 reboot series, but they should scrap all their current plans and make that show starring Miles and Jimmy Ford. And Danno. Two of the three are already in Hawaii and we already love watching them. I loved Sawyer's asking Kate if Miles got out of the Temple alive when they reunited. Sawyer really loves his little buddy.

I liked Detective Jimmy's doggedly cold calling every Anthony Cooper in the phone book. "Can I speak to Anthony Cooper. Speaking? Did you con my daddy and sleep with my mommy? No? Sorry to disturb."

This week, we got both scenarios for Kate and Claire played out: the one where Claire tried to murder Kate and the one where they hug it out and have a tearful reconciliation. Kate's reaction to Claire almost knifing her freckles off was really, really great. Such a good performance the whole episode by Evangeline Lilly. And the writing was great, all the way through to Kate and Smoke Locke's conversations. Now Aaron has a crazy mother just like Smoke Locke.

Smoke Locke also came clean to Sawyer about his being the Smoke Monster and killing everyone at the Temple. I think at the end of the day, Smoke Locke is honestly looking for people to trust, and he's probably gone centuries without friends. Because he didn't have a body. Smoke Locke seems to like Sawyer, who's remarkably pragmatic about the whole situation.

Sawyer's negotiations with Widmore was typical Lost-style. They usually end with an ultimatum of "I wanna get off this Island." Widmore didn't reveal his hand at all, though. Sawyer talked the whole game but we got nothing regarding what Widmore is actually up to, besides laying out a sonic barrier in preparation for Smoke Locke, "just like at New Otherton." (I also liked how Smoke Locke refers to the Others as "the Others". That name really stuck.)

Sawyer: "You and me, we're getting off this Island."
Kate: "Who's gonna fly the plane?"
Sawyer: "We ain't takin' the plane. We're takin' the sub."
Kate: "Same question applies, James. Who's gonna pilot the sub?"
Sawyer: "I ain't thought of that yet."

From now on though, my emergency word for any situation will be "LaFleur."

Ironically, Daniel Dae Kim is actually going to be on the new Hawaii Five-O.

I think Widmore just wants the Island for himself, and doesn't give a whit about Jacob, the Monster or anything else. He's shown he's willing to kill anyone to get the Island for himself, and obviously Jacob doesn't want that and MIB doesn't want it either (since with nobody to help him, he's stuck on the Island permanently).

This episode revealed to me that Gretchen from Prison Break doesn't actually have ridiculously blue eyes. Sad face.

I kept thinking that Widmore is there specifically to work with Locke (despite the sonic fence), and that if Sawyer tried to trick Locke, then he would have Widmore's report to back him up. After all, couldn't Widmore be doing recon on Sawyer?

I kept debating all episode if Sawyer, with his pop culture references stuck in 2004, would know who Tina Fey was to use the nickname on Zoey? I also kept waiting for Det. Ford to refer to Miles as Enos at least once.

I loved Ford punching the mirror.

I loved Sawyer pulling the same con from his first flashback, and I loved how he and Zoey basically replayed his con scene.

I was surprised by the Charlotte blind date. The museum tidbit should have telegraphed that. (Count me as hoping it would be Juliet...) Again, why is she in LA? And how is it that she and Miles were friends?

I'm curious to know what drove Miles to becoming a cop? Does he have his dead-talking powers in Sideways LOST?

The most frightening thing about Claire trying to stab Kate was that Sayid just watched. To think that he used to be among the smartest and trustworthy of the castaways...

I wonder if Lafleur got to practice playing in the Galaga as head of security.

Tina Fey began co-anchoring Weekend Update in 2000, so it's well within the realm of possibility.

Liam looked like he was doing pretty well for himself.

"I am the black smoke." Yeah, we knew it, but it sure was nice to hear something so straightforward on this show.

I think they're saving the inevitable Juliet/Sawyer meeting in the alternate reality for later in the season, maybe the finale itself. Juliet mentioning that coffee date in her half-dead delerium makes me think that scenario will come into play. Charlotte didn't make much sense, true, other than as part of the Lost producers' seeming intent to get as many past cast members and guest stars into the alternate universe as possible. I was thinking Sawyer's date could be Cassidy (his babymama), Ana Lucia or even Libby, but Charlotte was pretty far down the list of candidates.

Fun fact: Josh Holloway has now had on-screen hookups with four different female castmates. Plus, he's had bromances with Jin, Miles, and Hurley. Nice work, Josh!

He's not-quite-Sayid, so it makes sense. Disturbing, yes, but it looks like Dogen was right about Sayid having darkness overtaking him.

I was pretty sure Miles said that Charlotte worked at the museum with his dad (Dr. Pierre Chang), so she was actually my first guess for the blind date. Just typing that made me wonder why, in flash-sideways-Lost logic, I assumed that she'd still be an anthropologist, since Miles and Sawyer were cops - pretty much the antithesis of what they were pre-island. No answer for that.

I'm increasingly thinking the island is actually the Garden of Eden.

The Man in Black relies on temptation and manipulation to trick people into doing his will, much like the serpent. He doesn't have a name, much like the serpent. And in smoke form, he even moves like a snake.

Genesis 3 also refers to an angel being left to guard the Garden and keep man from the Tree of Life that grants everlasting life. Seems like Jacob might be that angel.

This would also explain Widmore's motivation, as he is trying to regain access to the Tree of Life.

Sawyer episodes are always pretty enjoyable and this one was no different. The thing I don't get is how are they going to get the airplane up to speed to fly, and what the hell makes Sawyer think they can drive a submarine?

Are you kidding me? She was rummaging through his shit pretty hard there for knowing someone all of one night. Sawyer had every right to bounce her, she should have been more apologetic when he came and saw her again.

and what the hell makes Sawyer think they can drive a submarine?

Either (1) force the sub pilot at gunpoint to do it, or (2) maybe Sawyer was taught how to operate the sub when he was head of security for the DI?

Whoa whoa whoa, I just remembered something ... If Sideways-Sawyer is supposed to be a police officer, then why'd he let a woman wearing handcuffs walk away from airport security in "LA X"?

It's not too hard to figure out. He obviously became a cop to track down Anthony Cooper (and other con men, probably). He probably didn't want to waste time and energy on catching a fugitive that had nothing to do with his ultimate goal.

Plus, he thought she was hot.

Also, if he catches her after being recognized on the flight back from Australia, then that blows his cover that he was in Palm Springs. The fact that he's a cop does make his whole "how am I supposed to recognize a 341 if I don't know what it is?" that much more amusing, though.
