Seems like I've got something odd happening about cookies & being logging out from wienerville. Don't know if its something about me & my ancient browser, or ??? Operationally I'm fine -- I don't think I have any features that I can't do.
Perhaps this rings a bell with someone guru-ish?
Context : old laptop, win95, ancient version of Netscape Communicator (4.73) -- clearly with this archaic a configuration, it very well could be something on my side!
OK, I log onto wienerville fine. Paranoid creature that I am, I've got my browser set up to see all the cookie changes that happen. So I get the 2 popups setting the loguserid & logpassword cookies to my values. Lovely. I can post fine, my userid is up among the logged on wieners, everything's lovely.
When I ask to logout (from the main page), everything seems to go fine. On logout I see the 2 popups confirming that we're changing the loguserid & logpassword cookies to "deleted" (or whatever the exact string is.). Seems good.
First wierdness : After I do that logout, I get the screens that look like I *am* logged *out*. (i.e. The different colour palette, missing the "you are jacked in as", etc.) But my logname is still among the "wieners online" list on the refreshed main screen.
Second wierdness : When I look in my cookies.txt file, the wienerville entries are still there with my actual loguserid & logpassword values -- not the "disabled" string that the popups claimed they were setting. Wassupwitdat?? I can shut down my system, come back the next day, bring up wienerville, & I'm immediately "jacked in".
Does this ring any bells with anybody? Am I confusing the server? Do I have too much time on my hands worrying about this kind of thing?
If memory serves, the online users list is actually all the IDs that have shown activity in the past....five minutes? So you will linger on as a ghost for a bit after you log out, but you'll eventually disappear if you're not logged in, I promise.
As for the cookies not actually being disabled...that's definitely a weird one and I'm not sure I can help you there. Maybe the two admins who have PCs can try to duplicate this. ;-)
As long as I'm not doing anything to confuse your server, I'm fine to manage the weirdnesses from my side. I just want to be sure not to do anything to incur the wrath of either Z !
===== edit ====== Oooh, I just noticed ...
On the popups for setting the cookies at login, I'm told "cookie will persist until Thu Mar 13 06:29:24 2031" (aka The End of Eternity)
On the ones at logout, I'm told "cookie will persist until Wed Dec 31 17:00:01 1969" (was that The Beginning of Time ?)
Don't know what you're sending, but 1) maybe my (old) browser is expecting a different format of the cookie request, &/or 2) probably my browser is saying "that expiration date is already past, so I'll ignore the request".
Looks like a bug in Netscape 4.73 to me. I just tried with Netscape 4.78 (set with the same "warn me about cookies" preference), and it get the same result as you, but it actually works. That is, I am logged out, and if I close the browser and come back, I'm still logged out.
On another front. Upgrade. NS4.x sucks. A lot. Grab Mozilla 1.1 or Netscape 7.x (if you're terribly brand loyal). You'll be happy you did.
Oh, I'm sorry sir. I didn't mean to infer that you might be poverty stricken. Should I revise my statement to make it clear that you have way more money than brains?
